َقَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ 1312 الرَّحمٰن

َ فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ﴿۳۴﴾ يُرْسَلُ عَلَيْكُمَا شُوَاظٌ مِنْ نَارٍ وَنُحَاسٌ فَلَا تَنْتَصِرَانِ ﴿۳۵﴾ فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ﴿۳۶﴾ فَإِذَا انْشَقَّتِ السَّمَاءُ فَكَانَتْ وَرْدَةً كَالدِّهَانِ ﴿۳۷﴾ فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ﴿۳۸﴾ فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَا يُسْأَلُ عَنْ ذَنْبِهِ إِنْسٌ وَلَا جَانٌّ ﴿۳۹﴾ فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ﴿۴۰﴾ يُعْرَفُ الْمُجْرِمُونَ بِسِيمَاهُمْ فَيُؤْخَذُ بِالنَّوَاصِي وَالْأَقْدَامِ ﴿۴۱﴾

﴾34﴿ Yaa ma'sharal jinni wal insi inis tata'tum an tanfuzoo min aqtaaris samaawaati wal ardi fanfuzoo; laa tanfuzoona illaa bisultaan
﴾35﴿ Yursalu 'alaikumaa shuwaazum min naarinw-wa nuhaasun falaa tantasiraan
﴾36﴿ Fabi ayyi aalaaa'i Rabbikumaa tukazzibaan
﴾37﴿ Fa-izan shaqqatis samaaa'u fakaanat wardatan kaddihaan
﴾38﴿ Fabi ayyi aalaaa'i Rabbikumaa tukazzibaan
﴾39﴿ Fa-yawma'izil laa yus'alu 'an zambiheee insunw wa laa jaann
﴾40﴿ Fabi ayyi aalaaa'i Rabbikumaa tukazzibaan.
﴾41﴿ Yu'raful mujrimoona biseemaahum fa'yu'khazu binna

﴾34﴿ So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny
﴾35﴿ A pure flame of fire and black smoke will be sent upon you, and you will not be able to defend yourselves
﴾36﴿ So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny
﴾37﴿ Then when the heavens are torn apart, they will become like red rose-colored molten metal
﴾38﴿ So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny
﴾39﴿ So on that Day, no sinner from among humans or jinn will be asked about his sin
﴾40﴿ So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny
﴾41﴿ The criminals will be recognized by their marks, so they will be seized by their forelocks and feet

[35,36] This is an independent threat of the Hereafter specifically for the deniers.
(شُوَاظٌ)—refers to green flames of fire that are not mixed with smoke; it can also refer to red flames.
(وَنُحَاسٌ)—refers to black flames not mixed with smoke; it can also mean molten copper.
[37,38] This too is a warning through describing the awe of the Day of Judgment, and it addresses a possible misconception: someone might assume that the current heavens and earth are what prevent humans from passing through, and if they are removed, humans would then be able to pass.
The answer is: the heavens will indeed be torn apart, but still, humans will not be able to escape.
(وَرْدَةً)—refers to rose-red, and it can also mean a red horse.
(كَالدِّهَانِ)—refers to red leather, or it is the plural of dahn, meaning oil. That is, the heavens will become red like rose and will melt and flow like oil.
[39,40] This too is a warning of the Hereafter. The letter "فا" (so/then) indicates that after the transformation of the state of the heavens, the Day of Judgment and reckoning will begin.
Ibn Kathir has said that the meaning is the closing of the doors of excuses—like what is mentioned in Surah Al-Mursalat (verse 36). That is, the meaning of (لَا يُسْأَلُ) is that they will not be asked to present excuses.
Or it may mean that at the beginning of resurrection and also upon being cast into Hell, they will not be questioned about their sins—rather, the questioning will happen at the place of reckoning.
It is also narrated from Abu Al-‘Aliyah that one sinner will not be asked about the sins of another sinner.
And most of the commentators have said that the questioning is not for Allah’s awareness—since He already knows—but for warning and reproach.
[41,42] This is a warning of the Hereafter, meaning that after the questioning (reckoning), the punishment will begin.
(بِسِيمَاهُمْ)—means their sins will be visibly marked on their bodies. Also included in their signs are the blackening of their faces, being blind, deaf, and mute, and being dragged on their faces.
(فَيُؤْخَذُ بِالنَّوَاصِي)—nawāṣī is the plural of nāṣiyah, the hair that hangs from the forehead. Keeping this kind of hair is the way of criminals and is against the Sunnah of the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace).
It may also mean that both the forehead hair and feet are grabbed together—one angel grabs the forelock and another the feet—and they are thrown into Hell.
