[39] This is torment and a refutation against the polytheists concerning the angels, and it also points to their ignorance.
[40] This torment pertains to the denial of prophethood — and in this is a reference to the sincerity of the Prophet, who conveys the message without seeking any reward.
[41] This also pertains to the denial of prophethood.
[42] (كَيْدًا) — plotting to kill the Prophet or to turn people away from him through various schemes and deceptions.
[43] This torment is due to their polytheism — meaning, they have no deity who can save them from being overpowered or make their plots succeed.
[44] This torment is due to their stubborn rejection of worldly warnings, and it is a response to their demand mentioned in Surah Bani Isra'il (17:92).
[45] This is a consequence of all the previous torments, which are due to their stubbornness. (حَتَّى يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ) — the day referred to here means the day of worldly punishment for those upon whom torment comes in this world, while the Day of Judgment is for all the deniers who persist in their enmity.
[46] In this is a mention of the dreadfulness of the Day of Punishment and the Day of Judgment.
