وَمَا لِيَ 1101 ص

أَأُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ الذِّكْرُ مِنْ بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُمْ فِي شَكٍّ مِنْ ذِكْرِي بَلْ لَمَّا يَذُوقُوا عَذَابِ ﴿۸﴾ أَمْ عِنْدَهُمْ خَزَائِنُ رَحْمَةِ رَبِّكَ الْعَزِيزِ الْوَهَّابِ ﴿۹﴾ أَمْ لَهُمْ مُلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فَلْيَرْتَقُوا فِي الْأَسْبَابِ ﴿۱۰﴾ جُنْدٌ مَا هُنَالِكَ مَهْزُومٌ مِنَ الْأَحْزَابِ ﴿۱۱﴾ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَعَادٌ وَفِرْعَوْنُ ذُو الْأَوْتَادِ ﴿۱۲﴾ وَثَمُودُ وَقَوْمُ لُوطٍ وَأَصْحَابُ الْأَيْكَةِ أُولَئِكَ الْأَحْزَابُ ﴿۱۳﴾ إِنْ كُلٌّ إِلَّا كَذَّبَ الرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ عِقَابِ ﴿۱۴﴾ وَمَا يَنْظُرُ هَؤُلَاءِ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً مَا لَهَا مِنْ فَوَاقٍ ﴿۱۵﴾

﴾8﴿ 'A-unzila 'alaihiz zikru min baininaa; bal hum fee shakkin min Zikree bal lammaa yazooqoo 'azaab
﴾9﴿ Am'indahum khazaaa 'inu rahmati Rabbikal 'Azeezil Wahhab
﴾10﴿ Am lahum mulkus samaawaati wal ardi wa maa bainahumaa falyartaqoo fil asbaab
﴾11﴿ Jundum maa hunaalika mahzoomum minal Ahzaab
﴾12﴿ Kazzabat qablahum qawmu Noohinw wa 'Aadunw wa Fir'awnu zul awtaad
﴾13﴿ Wa Samoodu wa qawmu Lootinw wa Ashaabul 'Aykah; ulaaa'ikal Ahzaab
﴾14﴿ In kullun illaa kazzabar Rusula fahaqqa 'iqaab
﴾15﴿ Wa maa yanzuru haaa ulaaa'i illaa saihatanw waahidatam maa lahaa min fawaaq

﴾8﴿ Has the revelation been sent down to him from among us, No, rather they are in doubt about My revelation. Indeed, they have not yet tasted My punishment
﴾9﴿ Do they possess the treasures of the mercy of your Lord, the Almighty, the Ever-Bestowing
﴾10﴿ Do they have control over the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them? Then let them ascend by means of ladders
﴾11﴿ They are a small army and will soon be defeated. They belong to the group of adversaries
﴾12﴿ The people of Noah (peace be upon him), the 'Ād, and Pharaoh, the lord of stakes, denied before them
﴾13﴿ And the Thamud, the people of Lot (peace be upon him), and the dwellers of the gardens—these were the adversaries in groups
﴾14﴿ They were none but those who denied the messengers, so Our punishment certainly came upon them
﴾15﴿ And these people await nothing but a single mighty cry, for which there will be no delay

[8] This is the torment for denying the Qur'an.
"(Rather, they are in doubt…)"—from here begins the refutation of these deniers in four ways.
The first way is that they used to call this Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) truthful and trustworthy, but when he began to preach the message of the Qur'an and monotheism, these people denied him due to their doubt in monotheism.
"(Rather, they have not yet tasted…)"—this is the second way, meaning: despite their denial and doubt, they have been granted respite, and punishment has not yet come upon them.
So they think they are on the right path.
[9] This is the third way—mentioning the sending down of Allah the Exalted’s mercy.
So, are the treasures of this mercy in their control that they claim this Messenger was not deserving of prophethood?
[10] This is the fourth way of refutation—meaning, if the dominion of the heavens and the earth is in their hands, and revelation comes down from the heavens, then let them ascend to the heavens and prevent the revelation from reaching the Prophet.
[11] In this is a consolation for the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace), with the destruction of the Quraysh of Mecca—meaning, soon they will be defeated right here (in Mecca), where they now deny the truth.
So do not pay attention to their words of denial.
"(From the factions)"—meaning, they are of the same kind as those who, in opposition to the prophets (peace be upon them), formed groups and acted with fanaticism.
[12,13,14] This is a worldly warning by mentioning past nations who denied the matter of monotheism, just like the current deniers.
Just as those nations did not achieve their goals, the current ones also will not be able to succeed.
And just as they were destroyed by various punishments, these people too will be destroyed by a single punishment.
Each of those past nations used their different strengths to oppose the prophets, but they achieved nothing.
"(The possessor of stakes)"—this refers to the extreme oppression of Pharaoh, who punished people and especially nailed the hands and feet of the monotheists.
It also alludes to his strong kingdom, as a stake (peg) symbolizes firmness and stability.
[15] This mentions the punishment of the Hereafter after the worldly warning, and in this is also a torment for denying the Resurrection.
"(A single cry)"—this refers to the first blowing of the trumpet that will cause the end of the world.
"(Fawāq)"—originally, it refers to the interval between two milkings of a she-camel or cow, where the young is allowed to suckle in between to stimulate more milk.
So the meaning here is that when the trumpet is blown, there will be no pause or delay—it will be continuous and extended.
Or, it means they will not be granted even a brief moment of respite equal to a fawāq.
