﴾4﴿ And they are astonished that a warner has come to them from among themselves, and the disbelievers said, This is a sorcerer, a great liar
﴾5﴿ Has he made the many gods into one God? Indeed, this is a very strange thing
﴾6﴿ And a group of them went forth, saying, Go and remain steadfast in the worship of your gods. Indeed, this is a matter that has been deliberately planned
﴾7﴿We have not heard of this in the last religion; this is nothing but an invented lie

[4] This explains their arrogance and discord, and their torment in denying the message. "(A warner from among them)" means a human being of their own kind, so they were astonished by his prophethood—similar to what is in Surah Yasin (2). "(And the disbelievers said)"—this phrase indicates that one who considers the Prophet a liar is certainly a disbeliever. And by "disbeliever" is meant one who rejects with hostility and opposition. "(A liar)"—that is, he is considered a liar concerning the matter of monotheism and the claim of prophethood.
[5] This is the torment for denying monotheism.
At first, the astonishment was mentioned regarding the claim of prophethood because of the Prophet’s humanity, and now the astonishment is about the matter of monotheism.
The first astonishment was mild, but the second is very severe.
The point is that the polytheists had created separate deities and intercessors for every need and for every nation.
Their belief was that a single being could not possibly handle all these tasks, and they measured the Creator by the limitations of creation.
So the Prophet called them to monotheism, meaning the fulfiller of all needs and the God of all creation is Allah the Exalted, the One and Only.
They were astonished by this and denied it—this is their foolishness and great ignorance.
[6] After denying monotheism, it mentions their firm adherence to polytheism.
"(That walk...)"—this refers either to leaving the gathering of monotheism or to always continuing on the path of polytheism.
Al-Zamakhshari has said that it means: gather in great numbers to confront the Prophet.
"(Indeed this...)"—this points to monotheism, meaning: this Prophet intends for us to accept monotheism.
Or, it refers to perseverance in polytheism, meaning: to engage in polytheism and remain firm upon it requires determination.
[7] This is the reason for their astonishment and denial—that they had not heard of this matter from their elders.
"(The last religion)"—this refers generally to their elders, as well as to later Christians and Jews, because all of them had denied monotheism and had not explained it.
Just as even now, ignorant people say: “We do not accept the matter of monotheism and Sunnah,” because our great scholars did not explain it to us.
