﴾68﴿ Rabbanaaa aatihim di'fai ni minal 'azaabi wal'anhum la nan kabeera

﴾61﴿ They are cursed where they are found, they shall be seized and killed in a decisive manner
﴾62﴿ Like the way of Allah the Exalted in those who passed before them, and you will never find any change in the way of Allah the Exalted
﴾63﴿ People ask you about the Hour (the Day of Judgment). Say, Indeed, its knowledge is only with Allah the Exalted. And what can make you know? Indeed, the Hour is near
﴾64﴿ Indeed, Allah the Exalted has cursed the disbelievers and has prepared for them a blazing fire
﴾65﴿ They will remain there forever and will never find any protector or helper
﴾66﴿ They will remain there forever and will never find any savior or helper
﴾67﴿ And they will say, O our Lord, indeed we obeyed our leaders and our elders, and they led us astray from the right path
﴾68﴿ O our Lord, give them double the punishment and curse them with a great curse

[63] This is also a torment for the hypocrites – since they were threatened with punishment, they began asking questions about the Day of Judgment in order to cast doubt among the believers and to silence the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) from responding.
[64,65,66,67,68] In this verse, the warning of the Hereafter is presented in eight ways: curse, blazing fire, eternal stay, everlasting punishment, having neither a protector nor a helper, regret over not obeying Allah the Exalted and His Messenger, and disavowal of false deities (We obeyed Allah and we obeyed the Messenger).
Since the purpose of this surah is the obedience of Allah and the Messenger, this warning is mentioned accordingly.
And this regret arises because they became certain that salvation lies solely in obeying Allah the Exalted and His Messenger.
(Sādatanā – Our leaders) refers to the elders and scholars who called them to shirk and innovations, and they followed them blindly.
(Kubarā’anā – Our great ones) refers to those in power who enforced rules and laws among the people that opposed the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (May Allah bless him and give him peace), and the people obeyed them.
Although the verse explicitly refers to following misguided people, it also implicitly includes the personal imitation (taqlid) of a scholar who, even if he makes a mistake in his ijtihad, and it becomes clear to the follower that this opinion contradicts the Qur'an and Sunnah — that is, it lacks evidence — yet he still does not abandon that opinion. This too is blameworthy imitation.
