وَمَنْ يَقْنُتَْْ 1032 الأحزاب
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِأَزْوَاجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ جَلَابِيبِهِنَّ ذَلِكَ أَدْنَى أَنْ يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا ﴿۵۹﴾ لَئِنْ لَمْ يَنْتَهِ الْمُنَافِقُونَ وَالَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ وَالْمُرْجِفُونَ فِي الْمَدِينَةِ لَنُغْرِيَنَّكَ بِهِمْ ثُمَّ لَا يُجَاوِرُونَكَ فِيهَا إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ﴿۶۰﴾
﴾59﴿ Yaaa aiyuhan Nabiyyu qul li azwaajika wa banaatika wa nisaaa'il mu'mineena yudneena 'alaihinna min jalaabee bihinn; zaalika adnaaa ai yu'rafna falaa yu'zain; wa kaanal laahu Ghafoorar Raheemaa
﴾60﴿ La'il lam yantahil munaafiqoona wallazeena fee quloobihim maradunw walmur jifoona fil madeenati lanughri yannaka bihim summa laa yujaawiroonaka feehaaa illaa qaleela
﴾59﴿ O Prophet, tell your wives, your daughters, and the believing women to draw their outer garments over themselves. This is closer to them being recognized and not being harassed. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful
﴾60﴿ If the hypocrites, those with disease in their hearts, and those who spread false rumors in Madinah do not desist, We will surely empower you against them, and then they will not remain among you except for a short while
[59] This is another address to the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace).
Since the previous verses prohibited harming the believers, this verse now mentions the method of preventing such harm, specifically regarding women.
By covering themselves properly, women would not be subjected to harm from hypocrites and immoral men, as the verse states: "so that they will not be harmed" (fa-lā yu’dhayna) — clearly stating the reason.
At the time of the Prophet’s passing, he had nine wives, and his daughters were: Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthūm, and Fāṭimah (may Allah be pleased with them).
"Yudnīna ‘alayhinna min jalābībihinna" — this ruling applies when women go out of the home for a need or necessity.
According to Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with them both), as narrated by Qurṭubī, Sharbīnī, and other commentators, the method of wearing the jilbāb (outer garment) is:
It should cover the head, face, and body all the way to the feet.
In one narration, only one eye may be left uncovered, and in another, both eyes may be visible.
This shows that covering the face is also obligatory.
The term jilbāb refers to any garment that covers the entire body, whether it's called a cloak, ḥijāb, or a long outer dress — as long as it conceals the head, face, and feet.
[60,61,62] This verse contains a rebuke (zajr) and worldly warning (takhwīf dunyawī) directed at the hypocrites, to further emphasize the previous ruling.
"Sunnat Allāh" — refers to the established way of Allah in dealing with those who, in previous nations, spread slander (irjāf) about the prophets, and hurled accusations and objections against them.
As a result, Allah defeated them, cursed them, and punished them with worldly torments.
In this verse, the warning is emphasized in seven different ways, showing the severity of the consequences for such behavior.
