﴾37﴿ Wa qawma Noohin lammaa kazzabur Rusula aghraqnaahum wa ja'alnaahum linnaasi Aayatanw wa a'tadnaa lizzaalimeena 'azaaban aleemaa
﴾38﴿ Wa 'Aadanw wa Samooda wa As haabar Rassi wa quroonan baina zaalika katheeraa
﴾39﴿ Wa kullan darabnaa lahul amsaala wa kullan tabbarnaa tatbeera
﴾40﴿ Wa laqad ataw 'alal qaryatil lateee umtirat mataras saw'; afalam yakoonoo yarawnahaa; bal kaanoo laa yarjoona nushooraa
﴾41﴿ Wa izaa ra awka iny yattakhizoonaka illaa huzuwan ahaazal lazee ba'asal laahu Rasoolaa
﴾42﴿ In kaada la yudillunaa 'an aalihatinaa law laaa an sabarnaa 'alaihaa; wa sawfa ya'lamoona heena yarawnal 'azaaba man adallu sabeela

﴾37﴿ And We destroyed the people of Noah when they denied the messengers. We drowned them and made them a sign for the people, and We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment
﴾38﴿ And We destroyed 'Ad and Thamud and the people of the well, and many generations between them
﴾39﴿ And for each [of them], We presented warnings, and each [of them], We destroyed with utter destruction
﴾40﴿ And indeed, they pass by the town upon which an evil rain was showered. So, did they not see it? But they do not believe in the resurrection
﴾41﴿ And when they see you, they take you in ridicule, [saying], Is this the one whom Allah has sent as a messenger
﴾42﴿ Indeed, he almost led us away from our gods, had we not been steadfast in worshiping them. But they will soon know, when they see the punishment, who is farthest astray from the path

[37] This transmitted proof refers to Nuh (peace be upon him), showing that Allah granted him blessings by destroying and drowning his opponents, and making them a lesson for later generations.
Punishment is also prepared for them in the Hereafter—this too is a form of blessing, as it deters those who oppose the truth.
The word “linnās” (for the people) is used here because his people were the earliest among past nations, making them an example for all of humanity.
[38,39] In this verse, three denying nations are mentioned, along with the preaching and advice given to them, and the mention of their destruction.
Regarding Ashāb ar-Rass, there is a difference of opinion. Rass refers to an unused or abandoned well.
The first opinion is that this was the people who threw the companion of Yāsīn into a well—this view is the most well-known.
The second opinion is that they were the people of Shu‘ayb (peace be upon him) who used to gather around a well.
The third opinion is that they were the same as the people of the trench (Ashāb al-Ukhdūd).
[40] This transmitted proof refers to the destruction of the people of Lut (peace be upon him), and it serves as a rebuke to the Arab polytheists who, during their journeys to Sham, would pass by the ruins of the people of Lut (peace be upon him).
Similar references are found in Surah Al-Hijr (15:79) and Surah As-Saffat (37:137–138).
The verse "Rather, they do not expect resurrection" indicates that they take no lesson from these signs because they do not believe in being resurrected.
[41] This is a rebuke for denying the Messenger and mocking him.
[42] This too is a rebuke with a warning—meaning, they accused the Messenger of Allah (May Allah bless him and give him peace) of being misguided, and considered remaining firm upon shirk as true religion.
However, when the punishment arrives, the truly misguided ones will become evident.
