قَدْ أَفْلَحَْ 828 المؤمنون

بَلْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فِي غَمْرَةٍ مِنْ هَذَا وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ ﴿۶۳﴾ حَتَّى إِذَا أَخَذْنَا مُتْرَفِيهِمْ بِالْعَذَابِ إِذَا هُمْ يَجْأَرُونَ ﴿۶۴﴾ لَا تَجْأَرُوا الْيَوْمَ إِنَّكُمْ مِنَّا لَا تُنْصَرُونَ ﴿۶۵﴾ قَدْ كَانَتْ آيَاتِي تُتْلَى عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنْتُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِكُمْ تَنْكِصُونَ ﴿۶۶﴾ مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِ سَامِرًا تَهْجُرُونَ ﴿۶۷﴾ أَفَلَمْ يَدَّبَّرُوا الْقَوْلَ أَمْ جَاءَهُمْ مَا لَمْ يَأْتِ آبَاءَهُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿۶۸﴾

﴾63﴿ Bal quloobuhum fee ghamratim min haazaa wa lahum a'maalum min dooni zaalika hum lahaa 'aamiloon
﴾64﴿ Hattaaa izaaa akhaznaa mutrafeehim bil'azaabi izaa hum yaj'aroon
﴾65﴿ Laa taj'arul yawma innakum minnaa laa tunsaroon
﴾66﴿ Qad kaanat Aayaatee tutlaa 'alaikum fakuntum 'alaaa a'qaabikum tankisoon
﴾67﴿ Mustakbireena bihee saamiran tahjuroon
﴾68﴿ Afalam yaddabbarrul qawla am jaaa'ahum maa lam yaati aabaaa'ahumul awwaleen

﴾63﴿ Rather, their hearts are in heedlessness of this (Book), and they have deeds besides that which they are continually doing
﴾64﴿ Until, when We seize their affluent ones with punishment, at that time they will cry out
﴾65﴿ Do not cry out today; indeed, you will not be helped by Us
﴾66﴿ Indeed, My signs were recited to you, but you used to turn back on your heels
﴾67﴿ Being arrogant, you used to forsake it as if it were mere tales
﴾68﴿ Do they not reflect upon this Qur'an? Rather, there has come to them that which did not come to their forefathers

[63] From here, the qualities of the deniers are mentioned again, and in meaning, they are connected to the phrase “بَلْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ” (rather, they do not perceive).
“غَمرَه” means heedlessness.
“هَذَا” refers either to the qualities of the believers as previously interpreted, or to the Book (record of deeds).
“وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ” means that in addition to shirk (polytheism) and disbelief, they have other deeds—such as innovations (bid‘ah), social corruptions, open sinfulness, and immorality.
Or, it could mean: apart from the righteous deeds of the believers, they have their own (opposing) deeds.
[64] This is a worldly warning.
“حَتَّى” is connected to “يَعْمَلُونَ” (they do [their deeds]).
And in “مُتْرَفِيهِمْ”, there is an indication of the cause behind their corrupt actions—namely, indulgence in luxury and wealth-driven lifestyles.
[65] Is this said in the present tense, or is it what the angels say to them at the time of death? Or is it a declarative sentence, meaning: this cry of yours will be of no benefit to you; help cannot come to you from Us, or you cannot be saved from Our punishment?
[66] This mention is the reason for the punishment, and it describes in detail the conditions of other deniers.
[67] In this mention, there are three states of the deniers. (مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِ) means they act arrogantly toward others because of the Sacred Mosque (Haram of Mecca), because the Qur'an was revealed to their people, and due to their kingdom. Or it means they are arrogant towards the Qur'an. In the first meaning, "bi" implies a causal meaning (because of), and in the second, it carries the meaning of "about" (like "an").
(سَامِرًا) means a group—i.e., they do not listen to the Qur'an but instead stay up at night telling stories. This was a habit of the polytheists; for this reason, hadith prohibits chatting after the night (ʿIshāʾ) prayer—except for religious talk or talking with one's family.
Qurṭubī narrated that ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to strike people who talked after ʿIshāʾ. Or sāmir(an) may be singular, and the phrase implies: You think of this Prophet and the Qur'an as mere storytellers.
(تَهْجُرُونَ) comes from hijrān—meaning you abandon the Qur'an and the Messenger—or from hajr, meaning you engage in pointless speech, which refers to senseless talk.
[68] This is a warning and a description of two qualities of the deniers, and the reference is to the words of the Noble Qur'an, as also seen in Surah An-Nisa (4:82) and Surah Muhammad (47:64). This is a reminder directed at those who recite the Qur'an and complete its readings, yet do not truly understand or become aware of it.
(أَمْ جَاءَهُمْ) – This is a warning, meaning: Has something new come to them? So they deny it, as mentioned in Surah Sad (38:7).
