وَمَا مِنْ دَابَّةٍ 524 یوسف

اقْتُلُوا يُوسُفَ أَوِ اطْرَحُوهُ أَرْضًا يَخْلُ لَكُمْ وَجْهُ أَبِيكُمْ وَتَكُونُوا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ قَوْمًا صَالِحِينَ ﴿۹﴾ قَالَ قَائِلٌ مِنْهُمْ لَا تَقْتُلُوا يُوسُفَ وَأَلْقُوهُ فِي غَيَابَتِ الْجُبِّ يَلْتَقِطْهُ بَعْضُ السَّيَّارَةِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ فَاعِلِينَ ﴿۱۰﴾

﴾9﴿ Uqtuloo Yoosufa awitra hoohu ardany yakhlu lakum wajhu abeekum wa takoonoo mim ba'dihee qawman saaliheen
﴾10﴿ Qaalaa qaaa'ilum minhum laa taqtuloo Yoosufa wa alqoohu fee ghayaabatil jubbi yaltaqithu badus sai yaarati in kuntum faa 'ileen

﴾9﴿ Kill Joseph, peace be upon him, or cast him into a land, then your father's attention will be solely upon you, and after this you will be among the righteous (you will repent)
﴾10﴿ The speaker said, 'Do not kill Joseph (peace be upon him), but instead cast him into the depths of a well, so that some of the travelers may find him, if you are to do so

[9] In this verse, the consultation among the brothers of Yusuf (peace be upon him) is mentioned regarding making Yusuf (peace be upon him) disappear in order to gain their father's love and attention. This verse serves as evidence that obtaining something through false or wrongful means is impermissible and wrong. Secondly, it proves that committing a sin with the intention of repenting later is not permissible. The word (wajh) here means either "attention" or "essence." The pronoun in (ba‘dihi) refers to killing or abandoning (casting away). This also shows that envy can lead a person to commit murder or to make someone disappear. [10] In this verse, the opinion of the eldest brother of Yusuf (peace be upon him) is mentioned, who said that killing is a great injustice, and taking him to another land is a difficult task. So they finally decided on the third suggestion—to throw him into a well beside the road in such a way that he wouldn't die, but also couldn't escape, and then a passing caravan might take him with them.
(al-jubb) refers to an unconstructed (natural or rough) well. (ghayābah) refers to an empty space or hidden chamber—it can mean any hidden place. Here, it implies that due to the water, Yusuf (peace be upon him) would be pushed into the depth of the well and a hidden chamber would be formed, concealed from view and above the water level.
(yaltaqiṭhu) indicates issues related to foundlings and abandoned property, the details of which are discussed in books of Hadith and Fiqh. This verse is also evidence that envy can lead a person to burden and harm their own brother.
