يَعْتَذِرُونَ 477 يونس
وَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَى مُوسَى وَأَخِيهِ أَنْ تَبَوَّآ لِقَوْمِكُمَا بِمِصْرَ بُيُوتًا وَاجْعَلُوا بُيُوتَكُمْ قِبْلَةً وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَبَشِّرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ﴿۸۷﴾ وَقَالَ مُوسَى رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ آتَيْتَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَأَهُ زِينَةً وَأَمْوَالًا فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا رَبَّنَا لِيُضِلُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِكَ رَبَّنَا اطْمِسْ عَلَى أَمْوَالِهِمْ وَاشْدُدْ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُوا حَتَّى يَرَوُا الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ ﴿۸۸﴾ قَالَ قَدْ أُجِيبَتْ دَعْوَتُكُمَا فَاسْتَقِيمَا وَلَا تَتَّبِعَانِّ سَبِيلَ الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿۸۹﴾
﴾87﴿ Wa awhainaaa ilaa Moosaa wa akheehi an tabaw wa aali qawmikuma bi Misra buyootanw waj'aloo buyootakum qiblatanw wa aqeemus Salaah; wa bashshiril mu'mineen
﴾88﴿ Wa qaala Moosaa Rabbanaaa innaka aataita Fir'awna wa mala ahoo zeenatanw wa amwaalan fil hayaatid dunyaa Rabbanaa liyudillo 'ansabeelika Rabbanat mis 'alaaa amwaalihim washdud 'alaa quloobihim falaa yu'minoo hatta yarawul 'azaabal aleem
﴾89﴿ Qaala qad ujeebad da'watukumaa fastaqeemaa wa laa tattabi'aaanni sabeelal lazeena laa ya'lamoon
﴾87﴿ And We revealed to Moses and his brother, [saying], Establish for your people dwellings in Egypt and make your houses places of prayer and establish prayer; and give good tidings to the believers
﴾88﴿ And Moses, peace be upon him, said, 'Our Lord, indeed You have given Pharaoh and his chiefs splendor and wealth in the worldly life, our Lord, that they may mislead [people] from Your path. Our Lord, nullify their wealth and bring hardness upon their hearts, so they will not believe until they see the painful punishment
﴾89﴿ Allah Almighty has said, Indeed, the prayer of both of you has been accepted.' Therefore, be steadfast in your own way, and do not follow the path of those who do not know
[87] In this verse, guidance is given regarding how reformers should act during times of hardship and trials.
When Pharaoh began oppressing them and did not allow worship in their places of worship, it was said to them: build places of worship in your own homes and worship there.
"أَنْ تَبَوَّآ لِقَوْمِكُمَا" means: separate your homes from those of the Pharaoh’s people, so that when punishment descends upon them, you may be safe. Thus, “houses” here either refers to their residential homes or to prayer spaces.
"قِبْلَةً" is understood to mean the Kaaba — because the Kaaba was the qiblah of all prophets — meaning, turn your places of worship toward the Kaaba. Or qiblah here could mean mosques, i.e., pray in your homes.
Benefit:
The first address is in dual form — directed at Musa and Harun (peace be upon them), because establishing places of worship and organizing matters is the responsibility of the prophets.
The second and third commands are in plural form, since worship is obligatory upon the whole nation.
The fourth address is in singular form, directed solely at Musa (peace be upon him), pointing to the greatness of the glad tidings and the significance of the message being delivered to him.
[88] In this verse, the supplication of evil refers to Prophet Musa’s (peace be upon him) prayer against Pharaoh and his people. Before making such a supplication, it is necessary to mention the crimes that justify it; therefore, he began with that: "You gave Pharaoh..."—meaning the love of the world became the cause of their wrongdoing. "So they mislead..."—this lam indicates the consequence, meaning the outcome of their wealth was that they themselves went astray and also led others astray.
"Blot out their wealth"—this means to render their wealth, whether it be coins, currency, crops, etc., useless and unbeneficial.
"Harden their hearts"—this means to seal their hearts in disbelief.
"So they do not believe"—this is connected to "so they mislead" according to most grammarians, and according to Akhfash and al-Farra’, it is the response to the commands "blot out" and "harden".
This supplication of Musa (peace be upon him) occurred when he had despaired of their believing, similar to what happened with Nuh (peace be upon him).
[89] In this verse, the acceptance of the supplication of Musa (peace be upon him) and Harun (peace be upon him) is mentioned. Most commentators have written that Musa (peace be upon him) would make the supplication, and Harun (peace be upon him) would say "Ameen" to it—and "Ameen" itself is a form of prayer. For this reason, the supplication is attributed to both of them in this verse. Ibn Kathir mentioned that this is also an argument for the one who says that when the imam recites Surah Al-Fatiha and the followers say "Ameen," it is as if they too have recited it. However, this narration is considered mawquf (stopped, not traced to the Prophet).
Al-Biqa'i wrote that at this time, Harun (peace be upon him) was absent, but he was pleased with the supplication, so it was attributed to him as well.
"So remain steadfast"—this means: remain firm in your religion until the supplication is accepted and continue your mission.
It also means: do not be hasty in expecting the acceptance of the prayer. According to some narrations, Pharaoh was destroyed forty years after the supplication was accepted.
"And do not follow the path..."—this means: do not behave like the ignorant by being impatient and hasty, for the one who rushes in prayer does not understand the wisdom behind the delay in granting it.
