وَاعْلَمُوا 418 التوبة

إِلَّا تَنْصُرُوهُ فَقَدْ نَصَرَهُ اللَّهُ إِذْ أَخْرَجَهُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا ثَانِيَ اثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِي الْغَارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَا فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَيَّدَهُ بِجُنُودٍ لَمْ تَرَوْهَا وَجَعَلَ كَلِمَةَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا السُّفْلَى وَكَلِمَةُ اللَّهِ هِيَ الْعُلْيَا وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ ﴿۴۰﴾ انْفِرُوا خِفَافًا وَثِقَالًا وَجَاهِدُوا بِأَمْوَالِكُمْ وَأَنْفُسِكُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ذَلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ ﴿۴۱﴾ لَوْ كَانَ عَرَضًا قَرِيبًا وَسَفَرًا قَاصِدًا لَاتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَكِنْ بَعُدَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الشُّقَّةُ وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ لَوِ اسْتَطَعْنَا لَخَرَجْنَا مَعَكُمْ يُهْلِكُونَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ ﴿۴۲﴾

﴾40﴿ Illaa tansuroohu faqad nasarahul laahu iz akhrajahul lazeena kafaroo saaniyasnaini iz humaa filghaari iz yaqoolu lisaahibihee laa tahzan innnal laaha ma'anaa; fa anzalallaahu sakeenatahoo 'alaihi wa aiyadahoo bijunoodil lam tarawhaa wa ja'ala kalimatal lazeena kafarus suflaa; wa Kalimatul laahi hiyal 'ulyaa; wallaahu 'Azeezun Hakeem
﴾41﴿ Infiroo khifaafanw wa siqaalanw wa jaahidoo bi amwaalikum wa anfusikum fee sabeelil laah; zaalikum khairul lakum in kuntum ta'lamoon
﴾42﴿ Law kaana 'aradan qareebanw wa safaran qaasidal lattaba'ooka wa laakim ba'udat 'alaihimush shuqqah; wa sayahlifoona billaahi lawis tata'naa lakharajnaa ma'akum; yuhlikoona anfusahum wal laahu ya'lamu innahum lakaa ziboon

﴾40﴿ If you do not help this Messenger, then indeed Allah Almighty helped him when the disbelievers drove him out, The second of two when they were both in the cave When the Prophet said, for his friend Do not grieve, for Allah is with us.Allah sent down tranquility upon him and strengthened him with armies they did not see And He made the word of the disbelievers lowly, and the word of Allah, the Most High, is higher, and Allah, the Most High, is the Almighty, the Wise
﴾41﴿ Go forth, whether you are light or heavily laden, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the way of Allah. That is better for you, if you know
﴾42﴿ If it had been (the battle of Tabuk), the provisions would have been easily obtained and the journey would have been in the middle, they would have gone with you, but the journey was too far for them And they will soon swear by Allah Almighty that if we had the power, we would certainly have gone out with you They destroy their selfs (by false oaths), and Allah knows that they are indeed liars

[40] In this verse, there is a warning against abandoning jihad, and it contains a reference to the event of the Hijrah of the Messenger of Allah (May Allah bless him and give him peace), during which Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him. They stayed for three days in the cave of Thawr. The details of this event have been mentioned by the hadith scholars.
In this verse, there is a virtue of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and a proof of his companionship. Whoever denies this is a disbeliever.
(إِلَّا تَنْصُرُوهُ) – the apodosis (result clause) is omitted; Allah is the One who guarantees His help.
(ثَانِيَ اثْنَيْنِ) means "the second of two," indicating that there were no more than two, and it is a proof of the precedence of the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace), meaning he was the first, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was the second.
(لِصَاحِبِهِ) – "his companion" refers to religious companionship, as already mentioned regarding the companionship in the cave.
(لَا تَحْزَنْ) – Grief and fear can also affect the Prophets (peace be upon them), as they did to Ya’qub, Ibrahim, Musa, and Lut (peace be upon them), so this is not a deficiency.
Qurtubi said that this grief of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was for the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace), and thus, it is a sign of perfection.
(كَلِمَةَ الَّذِينَ) – refers to the actions and words of disbelief, as well as the intentions of the disbelievers regarding the killing of the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace).
[41] In this verse, there is a command establishing the obligation of fighting (in jihad) in all conditions. Regarding the terms khifāfan (خفافاً) and thiqālan (ثقالاً), there are ten interpretations by the commentators. Some of them are:
1. Khifāfan refers to those lightly equipped with little weaponry, and thiqālan to those heavily equipped with much weaponry.
2. Khifāfan refers to the poor, and thiqālan to the wealthy. And so on.
However, those who are excused (from fighting) are not included in this command, so the verse is not abrogated.
[42]In this verse, there is a warning to the hypocrites for abandoning jihad, and four evil traits are mentioned. The subject of the verse is that the journey to Tabuk was very long—approximately 800 kilometers from Madinah al-Munawwarah—and obtaining spoils of war was also difficult, as the enemy was fierce in battle. Because of this, some of the hypocrites stayed behind from the journey.
This verse also proves that false oaths lead to destruction.
(‘araḍan) – All worldly possessions are referred to as ‘araḍ because they are temporary and passing.
(wa sayahlifūn) – Meaning: O Prophet, when you return to them, they will swear oaths.
