﴾38﴿ Allah Almighty says, Enter the group that has passed before you from jinn and humans in the fire, when they come in a group, they will curse their companions. Until they are united, everyone will say that their later people (disciples) are talking about their predecessors (elders)
﴾39﴿ And they say, the first ones, the last ones, then there is no favor for you on us, so taste the punishment because of what you used to do
﴾40﴿ Indeed the gates of heaven will not be opened for soul of those who thought that our verses were false and considered themselves greater than that And they will not enter the gate of Paradise until a camel goes through the eye of a needle, and this is how we punish the criminals
[38] This verse describes the state of barzakh, and the address is directed toward the souls.
Alternatively, it may refer to the Day of Gathering (ḥashr), meaning the address will occur on the Day of Judgment.
This verse specifically concerns leaders and scholars among the polytheists, who will converse with their followers and disciples.
(أُخْتَهَا) — refers to those who resemble one another in shirk and disbelief; the use of the feminine form is to express humiliation and degradation.
(ضِعْفًا) — means a double punishment: one for going astray themselves, and the other for leading others astray.
This is based on the hadith that whoever calls to misguidance bears his own sin and the sins of those who follow him.
(لِكُلٍّ ضِعْفٌ) — indicates that the followers also deserve a double punishment: one for accepting misguidance and another for imitating misguided leaders.
This points to the fact that ignorant imitation in disbelief and shirk is not an excuse.
However, the punishment of the leaders will be greater, due to their having more followers and their more significant role in spreading misguidance.
[39] "(مِنْ فَضْلٍ) Your kindness to us is not a favor, because if the disciples offered them gifts, the elders provided them with sustenance. Nor are you superior to us; you too are sinners like us. And this became evident to them from 'لِكُلٍّ ضِعْفٌ' (each will have double).
(تَكْسِبُونَ) 'Earning' refers to an action that is done continuously, meaning the polytheists would always commit their acts of polytheism."
[40] In the previous verses, the mention was of their entry into Hell; now it is about their being deprived of Paradise.
"(لَا تُفَتَّحُ لَهُمْ)" means: for the deeds, prayers, and souls of the believers, the gates of the heavens are opened, but for the disbelievers, they are not opened. In fact, it is mentioned in a hadith that when the soul of a disbeliever ascends to the heavens, it is cast back down into Sijjin, and it is said to that impure soul: Just as the entry of a camel into the eye of a needle is impossible, so too is the entry of these polytheists into Paradise.
This is called "ta‘liq bil-muhal" (a condition based on an impossibility).
