﴾159﴿ There is none among the People of the Book except that he will surely believe in him (Jesus) before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection, he (Jesus) will be a witness against them.
﴾160﴿ So, because of the wrongdoing of the Jews, We made forbidden for them certain good things which had been lawful for them, and because they prevented many people from the way of Allah.
﴾161﴿ And because of their taking interest (usury) though they had been forbidden from it, and their devouring of people’s wealth wrongfully, We have prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
﴾162﴿ But those of them who are firm in knowledge, and the believers who believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you, and those who establish prayer and give zakat and believe in Allah and the Last Day — those, We will surely give them a great reward.
[159] The best interpretation of this is that when Jesus (peace be upon him) descends from the heavens, then at that time all the People of the Book will believe in him.
This is also stated in the hadith of Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him).
And the testimony of Jesus (peace be upon him) against them is mentioned in Surah Al-Ma'idah.
[160] This explains another reason for the prohibition of good things.
What is meant by “good things” is the withholding of manna and salwa, the prohibition of fat, and what is mentioned in verse (146) of Surah Al-An‘am, as well as comfort and security in life.
Note: Because of such actions, this Ummah too may sometimes be deprived of rain, face high prices, or become humiliated and defeated.
May Allah protect us from such deeds — Ameen.
[161] In this, two reasons for prohibition are mentioned.
(Bil-bāṭil) — this includes all ways of acquiring other people’s wealth apart from the lawful way: theft, usurpation, deception, etc.
(Minhum) — this indicates that these qualities and persistent disbelief were not found in all the Jews.
[162] Since the previous verses mentioned the oppressors and disbelievers, now their opposites and the glad tidings for them are mentioned.
(Ar-rāsikhūna fi-l-‘ilm) — refers to the scholars who act fully upon the Book of Allah.
(Wal-muqīmīn) — the accusative case here indicates that this is specifically for praise, emphasizing the importance of prayer.
(Sanū’tīhim) — the “sīn” at the beginning is for emphasis.
