لَا يُحِبُّ اللَّهُ 204 النِّســاء

فَبِمَا نَقْضِهِمْ مِيثَاقَهُمْ وَكُفْرِهِمْ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَقَتْلِهِمُ الْأَنْبِيَاءَ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ وَقَوْلِهِمْ قُلُوبُنَا غُلْفٌ بَلْ طَبَعَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهَا بِكُفْرِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ﴿۱۵۵﴾ وَبِكُفْرِهِمْ وَقَوْلِهِمْ عَلَى مَرْيَمَ بُهْتَانًا عَظِيمًا ﴿۱۵۶﴾ وَقَوْلِهِمْ إِنَّا قَتَلْنَا الْمَسِيحَ عِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ وَمَا صَلَبُوهُ وَلَكِنْ شُبِّهَ لَهُمْ وَإِنَّ الَّذِينَ اخْتَلَفُوا فِيهِ لَفِي شَكٍّ مِنْهُ مَا لَهُمْ بِهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ إِلَّا اتِّبَاعَ الظَّنِّ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ يَقِينًا ﴿۱۵۷﴾ بَلْ رَفَعَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَزِيزًا حَكِيمًا ﴿۱۵۸﴾

﴾155﴿ Fabimaa naqdihim meesaaqahum wa kufrihim bi Aayaatil laahi wa qatlihimul Ambiyaaa'a bighairi haqqinw wa qawlihim quloobunaa ghulf; bal taba'al laahu 'alaihaa bikufrihim falaa yu'minoona illaa qaleelaa
﴾156﴿ Wa bikufrihim wa qawlihim 'alaa Maryama buh taanan 'azeema
﴾157﴿ Wa qawlihim innaa qatal nal maseeha 'Eesab-na-Maryama Rasoolal laahi wa maa qataloohu wa maa salaboohu wa laakin shubbiha lahum; wa innal lazeenakh talafoo feehee lafee shakkim minh; maa lahum bihee min 'ilmin illat tibaa'az zann; wa maa qataloohu yaqeenaa
﴾158﴿ Bar rafa'ahul laahu ilayh; wa kaanal laahu 'Azeezan Hakeemaa

﴾155﴿ So, because of their breaking the covenant, and their disbelief in the signs of Allah, and their killing of the prophets without just cause, and their saying, “Our hearts are wrapped (full of knowledge),” — rather, Allah has set a seal upon their hearts because of their disbelief, so they do not believe, except for a few.
﴾156﴿ And because of their disbelief and their uttering a great slander against Mary.
﴾157﴿ And for their saying, “We surely killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah.” But they neither killed him nor crucified him, but it was made to appear so to them. And surely those who differ concerning him are in doubt about it — they have no knowledge of it except following conjecture, and they certainly did not kill him for sure.
﴾158﴿ Rather, Allah raised him up to Himself, and Allah is Mighty, Wise.

[155] In this verse, five evils of the People of the Book are also mentioned.
From here, the reasons are explained for why good things were made forbidden for them.
(Fabimā) — “for what” indicates the cause and is related to “We forbade” (ḥarramnā) that is mentioned later, or to a hidden (implied) “We cursed.”
The explanation of ghulf (wrapped hearts) has already been discussed in Surah Al-Baqarah.
[156] They accused Mary of immorality, even though clear proofs of her chastity were shown to them.
In this verse, two of their evils are mentioned.
[157] Some of the Jews claimed to have killed Jesus (peace be upon him), and some Christians said that he was crucified, then taken down and died an hour later, so that he would be an atonement for our sins.
This verse refutes both groups.
(Wa lākin shubbiha lahum) — One meaning is that they killed the one who was made to resemble Jesus (peace be upon him); according to one narration, one of Jesus’s disciples was made to look like him and was killed, while Jesus was raised up.
Another meaning is that Jesus was raised up, and they killed a stranger from among his companions, and the people were made to believe that they killed Jesus.
The main meaning is that the event of Jesus’s killing became confused for them.
(Lafī shakkin minhu) — this refers to those who went out to kill him.
(Mā lahum bihi min ‘ilm) — this refers to the rest of the people who spread the news of his killing, so they too were only following speculation.
(Yaqīnan) — this is for emphasis, denying the killing absolutely.
[158] He was raised up both in body and soul together — it does not mean only his soul was raised, nor simply that his rank was elevated, because these are metaphorical meanings, and it is not permissible to abandon the literal meaning without necessity or proof.
(Azīzan) — means He is All-Powerful; nothing from the layers of fire or the upper realms can prevent Him.
(Hakīman) — Allah raised only Jesus (peace be upon him) up to the heavens, and not the other prophets — this is Allah’s wisdom.
