﴾152﴿ And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers and do not make any distinction between any of them, it is these whom Allah will soon grant their reward.
And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
﴾153﴿ The People of the Book ask you to bring down a Book upon them from the sky all at once.
Indeed, they asked Moses (peace be upon him) for something even greater than that when they said, “Show us Allah openly.”
So the thunderbolt seized them for their wrongdoing.
Then they took the calf for worship after clear signs had come to them, yet We pardoned them, and We gave Moses (peace be upon him) clear proofs.
﴾154﴿ And We raised the Mount (Sinai) above them because of their covenant, and We said to them, “Enter the gate prostrating,” and We said to them, “Do not transgress on the Sabbath,” and We took from them a firm covenant.
[152] In this verse, there is glad tidings for the believers, whether they are from the People of the Book or otherwise.
(Sawfa) — here it is for emphasis, not to imply any delay.
[153] This is a question stemming from their obstinacy, so the response begins by necessarily detailing their evils, as these serve as evidence that they have opposed the truth out of stubbornness.
In this, three evils are mentioned.
(An tunazzila ʿalayhim) — what is meant is that, like Moses (peace be upon him), the Book should be sent down all at once.
The details of these evils have already been discussed in Surah Al-Baqarah.
[154] In this verse, four of their conditions are mentioned, and it serves as a prelude to the next verse, showing that they violated these covenants.
(Sujjadan) — this means to bow the head and show humility.
(Mīthāqan ghalīẓan) — this means the rulings given before were firm, or it refers to other covenants mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah.
