وَلَا يَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَبْخَلُونَ بِمَا آتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ هُوَ خَيْرًا لَهُمْ بَلْ هُوَ شَرٌّ لَهُمْ سَيُطَوَّقُونَ مَا بَخِلُوا بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَلِلَّهِ مِيرَاثُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ ﴿۱۸۰﴾ لَقَدْ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ قَوْلَ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ فَقِيرٌ وَنَحْنُ أَغْنِيَاءُ سَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَالُوا وَقَتْلَهُمُ الْأَنْبِيَاءَ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ وَنَقُولُ ذُوقُوا عَذَابَ الْحَرِيقِ ﴿۱۸۱﴾ ذَلِكَ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ لَيْسَ بِظَلَّامٍ لِلْعَبِيدِ ﴿۱۸۲﴾
﴾180﴿ Wa laa yahsabannal lazeena yabkhaloona bimaa aataahumul laahu min fadilhee huwa khairal lahum bal huwa sharrul lahum sayutaw waqoona maa bakhiloo bihee Yawmal Qiyaamah; wa lillaahi meeraatus samaawaati wal ard; wallaahu bimaa ta'maloona Khabeer
﴾181﴿ Laqad sami'al laahu qawlal lazeena qaalooo innal laaha faqeerunw wa nahnu aghniyaaa'; sanaktubu maa qaaloo wa qatlahumul Ambiyaa'a bighairi haqqinw wa naqoolu zooqoo 'azaabal Hareeq
﴾182﴿ Zaalika bimaa qaddamat aideekum wa annal laaha laisa bizallaamil lil'abeed
﴾180﴿ And let not those who are stingy with what Allah has given them out of His bounty think that it is better for them.
Rather, it is worse for them—the wealth they withheld will be hung around their necks on the Day of Resurrection.
And to Allah alone belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is fully aware of what you do.
﴾181﴿ Indeed, Allah has heard the words of those who said, “Surely, Allah is in need, while we are self-sufficient.”
We shall record what they have said, as well as their killing of the prophets without right, and We shall say, “Taste the punishment of the burning fire.”
﴾182﴿ This punishment is in return for what their hands have sent forth (their past deeds), and surely Allah is never unjust to the servants.
[180] This is a warning to the hypocrites for their stinginess, and it is a threat of punishment in the Hereafter.
Stinginess here refers to withholding spending in obligatory places, such as for jihad and other religious duties.
(سَيُطَوَّقُونَ) — Its explanation is found in a hadith: the wealth will be transformed into a bald-headed serpent, which will be hung around their necks, biting their faces and saying, “I am your wealth, I am your treasure.”
(وَلِلَّهِ مِيرَاثُ) — This proves that Allah is the final inheritor of the entire universe, meaning He is the ultimate owner to whom all things return and who never perishes.
And the ignorant claim that “Allah and the Prophet are inheritors” is a statement of shirk (associating partners with Allah).
[181] From this verse begins the second section of this part, continuing up to verse 188.
In this verse, three disgraceful traits of the People of the Book are mentioned, which believers are warned to avoid:
1. Disrespecting Allah,
2. Denying the Messenger under false pretexts,
3. Concealing the truth.
In the previous verse, the evil of miserliness was addressed with the intent of encouraging people to spend in the cause of Allah.
In response, they objected: “Is Allah poor and we are rich?”
The intelligent among them said this as a rhetorical question, while the ignorant believed it literally.
(لَقَدْ سَمِعَ) — “Indeed, Allah has heard” is a stern warning, indicating severe condemnation.
(سَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَالُوا) — “We shall write what they said” refers to it being recorded by the noble recording angels (Kirām Kātbīn).
[182] There are two reasons for the punishment: one is their own deeds, and the other is Allah’s justice (i.e., His lack of injustice).
(بِظَلَّامٍ) — This is not a superlative form; rather, it simply means “unjust.”
