﴾118﴿ Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo laa tattakhizoo bitaanatam min doonikum laa ya'loonakum khabaalanw waddoo maa 'anittum qad badatil baghdaaa'u min afwaahihim; wa maa tukhfee sudooruhum akbar; qad baiyannaa lakumul Aayaati in kuntum ta'qiloon
﴾119﴿ Haaa antum ulaaa'i tuhibboonahum wa laa yuhibboonakum wa tu'minoona bil kitaabi kullihee wa izaa laqookum qaalooo aamannaa wa izaa khalaw 'addoo 'alaikumul anaamila minal ghaiz; qul mootoo bighai zikum; innal laaha 'aleemum bizaatis sudoor
﴾120﴿ In tamsaskum hasanatun tasu'hum wa in tusibkum saiyi'atuny yafrahoo bihaa wa in tasbiroo wa tattaqoo laa yad urrukum kaiduhum shai'aa; innal laaha bimaa ya'maloona muheet

﴾118﴿ O you who believe, do not take as close confidants anyone other than the believers. They will not fail to harm you and wish for your suffering. Hatred has already become apparent from their mouths, and what their hearts conceal is far worse. Indeed, We have made clear to you the signs, if you use reason.
﴾119﴿ Be aware, O you who believe: you love them, but they do not love you. You believe in all the scriptures, yet when they meet you, they say, “We have believed.” But when they are alone, they bite their fingers in rage against you. Say, “Die in your rage.” Indeed, Allah the Exalted is All-Knowing of what is hidden in the hearts.
﴾120﴿ If something good happens to you, it displeases them; and if hardship befalls you, they rejoice at it. But if you are patient and mindful of Allah, their plotting will not harm you in the least. Indeed, Allah the Exalted encompasses all that they do (in His knowledge and power).

[118] In this verse, the fifth principle is mentioned: do not make disbelievers and polytheists your confidants or include them in your private affairs. For this, ten reasons are given.
They desire what would burden and harm you.
Hatred slips out of their mouths unintentionally — it reveals itself through their words.
Refers to the evidences and signs of their enmity.
[119] In this verse, additional reasons are mentioned to sever your emotional attachment to them. Your love is shown through wishing them well, but they do not wish you well in return.
The other side is implied — meaning they, out of spite, do not believe in your Book (the Qur’an).
(عَضُّوا عَلَيْكُمُ الْأَنَامِلَ): Due to intense anger, at first they place their fingers in their mouths, and when their rage increases, they bite down firmly — in other words, they gnaw their own fingers out of fury.
Meaning, the honor and progress of the believers will continue, so the rage and jealousy of the hypocrites will never end — let them die in their rage.
[120] In this verse, other aspects are mentioned, indicating that through patience and piety one attains protection from the plots of enemies.
