قُلْ صَدَقَ اللَّهُ فَاتَّبِعُوا مِلَّةَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ ﴿۹۵﴾ إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَيْتٍ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِي بِبَكَّةَ مُبَارَكًا وَهُدًى لِلْعَالَمِينَ ﴿۹۶﴾ فِيهِ آيَاتٌ بَيِّنَاتٌ مَقَامُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمَنْ دَخَلَهُ كَانَ آمِنًا وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا وَمَنْ كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنِ الْعَالَمِينَ ﴿۹۷﴾ قُلْ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لِمَ تَكْفُرُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ شَهِيدٌ عَلَى مَا تَعْمَلُونَ ﴿۹۸﴾
﴾95﴿ Qul sadaqal laah; fattabi'oo Millata Ibraaheema Haneefanw wa maa kaana minal mush rikee

﴾97﴿ Feehi Aayaatum baiyinaatum Maqaamu Ibraaheema wa man dakhalahoo kaana aaminaa; wa lillaahi 'alan naasi Hijjul Baiti manis tataa'a ilaihi sabeelaa; wa man kafara fa innal laaha ghaniyyun 'anil 'aalameen
﴾98﴿ Qul yaaa Ahlal Kitaabi lima takfuroona bi Aayaatillaahi wallaahu shaheedun 'alaa maa ta'maloon
﴾95﴿ Say, “Allah has spoken the truth, so follow the religion of Abraham (peace be upon him)—he was firmly monotheistic and was not among the polytheists.”
﴾96﴿ Indeed, the first house established for mankind is surely the one in Mecca, full of blessing and guidance for all the worlds.
﴾97﴿ In it are clear signs (of Allah’s power)—one of them is the Station of Abraham (peace be upon him). And whoever enters it is safe. And Allah has the right upon people that they should perform Hajj to the House (it is obligatory) upon anyone who is able to find a way to it. And whoever disbelieves (by denying the obligation of Hajj), then surely Allah is free of need from all people.
﴾98﴿ Say, “O People of the Book, why do you disbelieve in the signs of Allah? And Allah is fully aware of what you do.”
[95] In this verse, there is another refutation of the objecting Jews: there is no polytheism in the religion of Abraham (peace be upon him), yet you are polytheists while claiming to follow the religion of Abraham.
[96] In this verse, their fourteenth reprehensible trait is mentioned, and it is also an answer to their question. Their question was: “We are superior to you because our qiblah came before yours.” The answer given is that this reasoning is incorrect. “Bakkah” refers to Masjid al-Haram (the Sacred Mosque), while “Makkah” refers to the entire city. “Blessed” (mubārak) means that a little worship there receives abundant reward—one prayer in Masjid al-Haram is rewarded a hundred thousand times, and there are also worldly blessings in it. “Guidance” means it is a source of guidance because it is the qiblah (direction) for all creatures, both before and after, and it is also the center of guidance. “Was established” (wuḍiʿa) means it was set up for worship. “For mankind” (li-n-nās) is evidence that the Ka‘bah was the qiblah for all people—except for the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace), whose qiblah was Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem) for sixteen or seventeen months before it was abrogated.
[97] (Ayātun bayyināt) — The Black Stone, the Multazam, the Yemeni Corner, the water of Zamzam, the descent of divine lights, the reassurance felt in the hearts upon seeing it—all of these are clear signs. (Kāna āminan) — One meaning is that whoever enters the House of Allah with faith will be safe from Allah’s punishment; another meaning is that anyone who enters the House is, according to Islamic law, safe—dishonoring or killing such a person is a major sin. (Wa lillāh) — This phrase is stated because the polytheists would perform Hajj for show or to honor their idols. (Maqāmu Ibrāhīm) — Its subject is hidden, i.e., one of those signs is the Station of Abraham. It is a stone on which Abraham (peace be upon him) stood while building the Ka‘bah, or it refers to the place where Abraham stood to pray and supplicate; thus, the entire Sacred Mosque, Safa and Marwah, Mina, and Muzdalifah are all included in this. (Man isṭaṭāʿa ilayhi sabīlan) — This means whoever possesses the provisions and means for the journey, as well as extra funds beyond the basic needs of their family and dependents. (Wa man kafara) — Whoever denies the obligation of Hajj is a disbeliever.
[98] This is a warning for the People of the Book. Here, disbelief refers to not acting (upon the truth), and “signs” (āyāt) here means the Noble Qur’an.
