﴾86﴿ How can Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their faith, and after they had testified that the Messenger is true, and clear signs had come to them? And Allah does not guide a wrongdoing people (i.e., those who are stubborn in their hostility).
﴾87﴿ The recompense for such people is that upon them is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.
﴾88﴿ They will remain in it forever; the punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be given any respite.
﴾89﴿ Except for those who repent after this and do righteous deeds—surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
﴾90﴿ Indeed, those who disbelieve after having believed, and then increase in disbelief (until death), their repentance will never be accepted—and those are the ones who are greatly astray.
﴾91﴿ Indeed, those who disbelieved and died while they were disbelievers—never will the earth full of gold be accepted from any of them, even if they offered it as a ransom. For such people is a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers.

[86] In this verse, the twelfth reprehensible trait is mentioned, which is apostasy—despite having understanding, due to their stubbornness and hostility. Primarily, those referred to here are the People of the Book, who believed in the last Prophet before his coming and testified to his prophethood, as indicated in verse 89 of Surah Al-Baqarah. But after his arrival, they disbelieved. Similarly, every apostate is also included in this warning.
[87-88] This is a warning regarding the Hereafter, and similarly, in verses 161 and 162 of Surah Al-Baqarah, the same threat is mentioned concerning those who conceal the truth.
[89] Here, repentance refers to ordinary people and to those who have committed sins other than concealing the truth.
[90] The purpose of the verse is that if an apostate remains in disbelief until death and then repents at the moment of the death rattle (ghargara), his repentance will not be accepted. “Azdādu kufran” means persisting in disbelief until death. “Al-ḍāllūn” refers to those who are completely astray—that is, at the level of outright disbelief.
[91] The point of this verse is that if a person does not repent and dies as a disbeliever, then even if someone offers a ransom of the earth filled with gold on his behalf—or he himself tries to offer it as a ransom on the Day of Judgment—it will not be accepted. Thus, it becomes clear that after death, without repentance, there is no other way to salvation. The same is mentioned in verse 36 of Surah Al-Ma'idah and in verse 70 of Surah Al-An'am.
