رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْوَهَّابُ ﴿۸﴾ رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ جَامِعُ النَّاسِ لِيَوْمٍ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُخْلِفُ الْمِيعَادَ ﴿۹﴾ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَنْ تُغْنِيَ عَنْهُمْ أَمْوَالُهُمْ وَلَا أَوْلَادُهُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا وَأُولَئِكَ هُمْ وَقُودُ النَّارِ ﴿۱۰﴾ كَدَأْبِ آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ وَالَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا فَأَخَذَهُمُ اللَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَاللَّهُ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ ﴿۱۱﴾
﴾8﴿ Rabbanaa laa tuzigh quloobanaa ba'da iz hadaitanaa wa hab lanaa mil ladunka rahmah; innaka antal Wahhaab
﴾9﴿ Rabbanaaa innaka jaami 'un-naasi li Yawmin laa raiba feeh; innal laaha laa yukhliful mee'aad
﴾10﴿ Innal lazeena kafaroo lan tughniya 'anhum amwaaluhum wa laaa awlaaduhum minal laahi shai'anw wa ulaaa'ika hum waqoodun Naar
﴾11﴿ Kadaabi Aali Fir'awna wallazeena min qablihim; kazzaboo bi Aayaatinaa fa akhazahumul laahu bizunoo bihim; wallaahu shadeedul 'iqaab
﴾8﴿ (They say:) “Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us from Yourself firmness in faith. Surely, You are the Bestower.”
﴾9﴿ O our Lord, surely You will gather all people on the Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, Allah does not break His promise.
﴾10﴿ Surely those who disbelieve—their wealth and their children will never protect them from the punishment of Allah in the least. And they are the fuel of the Fire.
﴾11﴿ Their condition is like the condition of the people of Pharaoh and those before them—they denied Our signs, so Allah seized them for their sins. And Allah is severe in punishment.
[8] This supplication is for steadfastness. Here, rahmah (mercy) means firmness in faith. It indicates that when misguided scholars lead people astray through mutashābihāt (ambiguous verses), it is essential at such times to frequently recite this supplication.
[9] This supplication is also in an implied form—meaning: “So do not disgrace us through deviation (zaygh) on the Day of Gathering.”
Jāmiʿu (Gatherer) — in this world, people were in separate places and different times, but on the Day of Judgment, Allah will gather all of them in one plain.
[10] This is a discouragement from attachment to the worldly life and a warning for those who deny the Oneness of Allah.
(Amwāluhum wa lā awlādahum) — meaning: even if a disbeliever or polytheist gives away their wealth in charity, or if their children are righteous, or they try to offer ransom in place of that wealth—it will not be accepted.
(Lan tughniya) — ughniya means to protect or benefit; here, it means their wealth and children will not protect them or avail them in any way.
[11] This mention of the former deniers is given as an example of punishment.
(Ka-da’bi) — da’b means condition, habit, or consistent behavior.
(Wa alladhīna min qablihim) — the mention stops at “those before them” and does not extend to those after them, because after the destruction of Pharaoh, no nation faced a total, uprooting (isti’sālī) punishment.
