إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَالَّذِينَ هَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أُولَئِكَ يَرْجُونَ رَحْمَتَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ ﴿۲۱۸﴾ يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ قُلْ فِيهِمَا إِثْمٌ كَبِيرٌ وَمَنَافِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَإِثْمُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنْ نَفْعِهِمَا وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ مَاذَا يُنْفِقُونَ قُلِ الْعَفْوَ كَذَلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللَّهُ لَكُمُ الْآيَاتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَفَكَّرُونَ ﴿۲۱۹﴾ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْيَتَامَى قُلْ إِصْلَاحٌ لَهُمْ خَيْرٌ وَإِنْ تُخَالِطُوهُمْ فَإِخْوَانُكُمْ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ الْمُفْسِدَ مِنَ الْمُصْلِحِ وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَأَعْنَتَكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ ﴿۲۲۰﴾
﴾218﴿ Innal lazeena aamanoo wallazeena haajaroo wa jaahadoo fee sabeelil laahi ulaaa'ika yarjoona rahmatal laah; wallaahu Ghafoorur Raheem
﴾219﴿ Yas'aloonaka 'anilkhamri walmaisiri qul feehimaaa ismun kabeerunw wa manaafi'u linnaasi wa ismuhumaa akbaru min naf'ihimaa; wa yas'aloonaka maaza yunfiqoona qulil-'afwa; kazaalika yubaiyinul laahu lakumul-aayaati la'allakum tatafakkaroon
﴾220﴿ Fid dunyaa wal aakhirah; wa yas'aloonaka 'anil yataamaa qul islaahullahum khayr, wa in tukhaalitoohum fa ikhwaanukum; wallaahu ya'lamul mufsida minalmuslih; wa law shaaa'al laahu la-a'natakum; innal laaha 'Azeezun Hakeem
﴾218﴿ Indeed, those who believed, and those who migrated and strove in the path of Allah — they are the ones who hope for the mercy of Allah. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
﴾219﴿ They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: In both of them is great sin and some benefit for people, but their sin is greater than their benefit. And they ask you what they should spend. Say: Spend what is surplus. Thus Allah makes clear the rulings for you so that you may reflect.
﴾220﴿ In this world and the Hereafter. And they ask you about orphans. Say: Doing what is good for them is better. And if you mix your spending with theirs, then they are your brothers. And Allah knows the corrupter from the reformer. And if Allah had willed, He could have made things difficult for you. Indeed, Allah is Almighty and Wise.
[218] In this verse, there is glad tidings for the believers, the emigrants, and those who strive in the path of Allah — in contrast to the apostates. The phrase “they hope for the mercy of Allah” is a declarative statement with the meaning of a command, i.e., they should have hope.
[219] This is the fourth ruling concerning wine and gambling. The principle here is that if something brings little benefit but much harm — like wine and gambling — you must avoid it. And if something brings great benefit with little harm — like spending in the path of Allah — then you should do it. This verse refutes the view of ignorant people who focus only on the benefits of wine and gambling and ignore their harms, which is why they engage in drinking and gambling. Wine refers to any intoxicating drink that causes a loss of reason, regardless of its source. Gambling includes every type of betting. “Their sin is greater than their benefit” — the verse uses greater rather than more to indicate that even one major sin outweighs countless minor benefits. “So that you may reflect on this in this world and the Hereafter” — thinking about the world means preserving wealth for one’s needs, and thinking about the Hereafter means spending wealth for the sake of Allah.
[220] This is the fifth ruling, concerning orphans, and it refutes the ways of ignorance in which they wronged orphans and deceitfully consumed their wealth by mixing it with their own. “The corrupter” refers to the one who consumes the wealth of orphans through deceit under the guise of combining it. “He could have made things difficult for you” — ‘anat refers to great hardship and burden, meaning Allah could have imposed a strict ruling, but He did not.
