002_124 surah 2: Al Baqarah
سَيَقُولُ 77 اَلٌبَقَرَة

كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْقِتَالُ وَهُوَ كُرْهٌ لَكُمْ وَعَسَى أَنْ تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ وَعَسَى أَنْ تُحِبُّوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ شَرٌّ لَكُمْ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ﴿۲۱۶﴾ يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الشَّهْرِ الْحَرَامِ قِتَالٍ فِيهِ قُلْ قِتَالٌ فِيهِ كَبِيرٌ وَصَدٌّ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَكُفْرٌ بِهِ وَالْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ وَإِخْرَاجُ أَهْلِهِ مِنْهُ أَكْبَرُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ وَالْفِتْنَةُ أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الْقَتْلِ وَلَا يَزَالُونَ يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ حَتَّى يَرُدُّوكُمْ عَنْ دِينِكُمْ إِنِ اسْتَطَاعُوا وَمَنْ يَرْتَدِدْ مِنْكُمْ عَنْ دِينِهِ فَيَمُتْ وَهُوَ كَافِرٌ فَأُولَئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَالُهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَأُولَئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ ﴿۲۱۷﴾

﴾216﴿ Kutiba alaikumulqitaalu wa huwa kurhullakum wa 'asaaa an takrahoo shai'anw wa huwa khairullakum wa 'asaaa an tuhibbo shai'anw wa huwa sharrullakum; wallaahu ya'lamu wa antum laa ta'lamoon
﴾217﴿ Yas'aloonaka 'anish Shahril Haraami qitaalin feehi qul qitaalun feehi kabeerunw wa saddun 'an sabeelil laahi wa kufrum bihee wal Masjidil Haraami wa ikhraaju ahlihee minhu akbaru 'indal laah; walfitnatu akbaru minal qatl; wa laa yazaaloona yuqaatiloonakum hatta yaruddookum 'an deenikum inis tataa'oo; wa mai yartadid minkum 'an deenihee fayamut wahuwa kaafirun fa ulaaa'ika habitat a'maaluhum fid dunyaa wal aakhirati wa ulaaa'ika ashaabun Naari hum feehaa khaalidoon

﴾216﴿ Fighting has been prescribed for you, though it is disliked by you. But it may be that you dislike something while it is better for you, and it may be that you love something while it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you do not know.
﴾217﴿ They ask you about fighting in the sacred month. Say: Fighting in it is a great sin. But to hinder from the path of Allah, disbelief in Him, and expelling people from the Sacred Mosque is greater in the sight of Allah. And associating partners with Him is a greater sin than killing. And they will continue to fight you until they turn you away from your religion, if they are able. And whoever among you turns back from his religion and dies while he is a disbeliever — then those are the ones whose deeds are lost in this world and the Hereafter, and they are the companions of the Fire. They will abide in it forever.

[216] This is the second ruling. It points to a principle that good and evil should not be determined based on one’s own reasoning but should be understood through the guidance of divine law. It is also a rebuttal to the ignorant who see fighting as something evil and claim it is nothing but bloodshed. The word ‘asa (perhaps) when used by Allah indicates certainty. And in this verse, an example of darra’ (physical hardship) is mentioned.
[217] This is the third ruling: observing sacred times according to divine law is necessary. It refutes the way of the ignorant who, when weak, considered fighting during the sacred month sinful, but when strong, showed no regard for it. They did not consider associating partners with Allah or preventing monotheists from the Sacred Mosque to be sinful. In this verse, there is a warning of the Hereafter for apostates. It also includes an example of zulzilu (being shaken), meaning the objections raised by the disbelievers. The verse indicates that in order to refute a major sin, a lesser sin might be mentioned for comparison. Six acts of disbelief and major sins of the disbelievers are referenced here. “Their deeds are void in this world and the Hereafter” — in this world, it means their prayers, Hajj, and other acts have no value; and in the Hereafter, their reward is completely lost.
