002_124 surah 2: Al Baqarah

﴾206﴿ Wa izaa qeela lahuttaqil laaha akhazathul izzatu bil-ism; fahasbuhoo jahannam; wa labi'sal mihaad
﴾207﴿ Wa minan naasi mai yashree nafsahub tighaaa'a mardaatil laah; wallaahu ra'oofum bil'ibaad
﴾208﴿ Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanud khuloo fis silmi kaaaffatanw wa laa tattabi'oo khutuwaatish Shaitaan; innahoo lakum 'aduwwum mubeen
﴾209﴿ Fa in zalaltum minba'di maa jaaa'atkumul baiyinaatu fa'lamoo annallaaha 'Azeezun hakeem

﴾206﴿ When it is said to him, "Fear Allah," pride in sin seizes him. Then Hell is sufficient for him, and indeed, what a terrible place it is that has been prepared.
﴾207﴿ And among the people is one who sells his own soul in pursuit of the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is most kind to His servants.
﴾208﴿ O believers, enter fully into Islam and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, Satan is a clear enemy to you.
﴾209﴿ Then if you slip after clear commands have come to you, know that indeed Allah is Almighty and Wise.

[206] In this verse, one attribute is mentioned, and that is the warning of the Hereafter. "Pride in sin seizes him" — pride here means ego-driven stubbornness or arrogance. It implies that he begins to feel zeal for committing sins, becoming firm in sin, or that due to sin, his heart becomes so hardened that his pride prevents him from accepting advice. "And what a terrible resting place it is" — the word mihad refers to a place prepared for a guest to rest, so using this term for Hell is either a form of harsh irony or it refers to the evil deeds that these people have prepared as their own resting place.
[207] In this verse, the fourth type of people is mentioned. These are the truly fortunate ones who sacrifice their lives for the sake of Allah. They strive in the path of Allah — either through calling others to His way or through fighting in His cause. "Yashri" means to sell, and it refers to spending and sacrificing one’s life.
[208] In this verse, there is encouragement to fully accept the entire religion of Islam, meaning that acts such as Hajj and all other religious practices should be kept pure from innovations. It commands that all aspects of Islam be applied to one's life — in beliefs, worship, dealings, during hardships and times of ease, and more. Those who follow some practices of Islam while also engaging in the practices of polytheists, disbelievers, or innovators are going against this verse. "Footsteps" refers to disbelief, innovations, and acts of polytheism.
[209] This is a warning for those who do not fully enter into Islam. "You slip" refers to stumbling — whether done intentionally or out of ignorance — but in this context, the intentional form is meant.
