قُلْ إِنْ كَانَتْ لَكُمُ الدَّارُ الْآخِرَةُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ خَالِصَةً مِنْ دُونِ النَّاسِ فَتَمَنَّوُا الْمَوْتَ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ ﴿۹۴﴾وَلَنْ يَتَمَنَّوْهُ أَبَدًا بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِالظَّالِمِينَ ﴿۹۵﴾وَلَتَجِدَنَّهُمْ أَحْرَصَ النَّاسِ عَلَى حَيَاةٍ وَمِنَ الَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا يَوَدُّ أَحَدُهُمْ لَوْ يُعَمَّرُ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ وَمَا هُوَ بِمُزَحْزِحِهِ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ أَنْ يُعَمَّرَ وَاللَّهُ بَصِيرٌ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ ﴿۹۶﴾قُلْ مَنْ كَانَ عَدُوًّا لِجِبْرِيلَ فَإِنَّهُ نَزَّلَهُ عَلَى قَلْبِكَ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ مُصَدِّقًا لِمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَهُدًى وَبُشْرَى لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ﴿۹۷﴾
﴾94﴿ Qul in kaanat lakumud Daarul Aakhiratu 'indal laahi khaalisatam min doonin naasi fatamannawul mawta in kuntum saadiqeen
﴾95﴿ Wa lai yatamannawhu abadam bimaa qaddamat aydeehim; wallaahu 'aleemum bizzaalimeen
﴾96﴿ Wa latajidannahum ahrasannaasi 'alaa hayaatinw wa minal lazeena ashrakoo; yawaddu ahaduhum law yu'ammaru alfa sanatinw wa maa huwa bi muzahzihihee minal 'azaabi ai yu'ammar; wallaahu baseerum bimaa ya'maloon
﴾97﴿ Qul man kaana 'aduwwal li Jibreela fainnahoo nazzalahoo 'alaa qalbika bi iznil laahi musaddiqal limaa baina yadaihi wa hudanw wa bushraa lilmu'mineen
﴾94﴿ Say, if the home of the Hereafter (Paradise) with Allah is exclusively for you and not for others, then wish for death—if you are truthful.
﴾95﴿ And they will never wish for death—ever—because of what their hands have sent forth. And Allah knows well the wrongdoers.
﴾96﴿ And indeed, you will find them the most eager of all people for worldly life—even more than those who associate partners with Allah. Each one of them wishes that he could be granted a life of a thousand years. But his being granted a long life will not remove him from the punishment. And Allah is All-Seeing of what they do.
﴾97﴿ Say, whoever is an enemy to Gabriel (peace be upon him)—then he is doomed—for indeed he brought down the Quran upon your heart by the command of Allah, confirming what came before it, and as guidance and glad tidings for the believers.
[94] In this verse, the challenge of mutual invocation (mubahala) with the Jews is mentioned. The point is: if you claim to be destined for Paradise and are upon the truth, then come and supplicate to Allah—that whoever is lying, may death come upon him. This is similar to what is mentioned in verse 6 of Surah Al-Jumu'ah.
In this surah (Al-Baqarah), their claim to Paradise is mentioned in verses 80 and 111, which is why here “the home of the Hereafter” is referenced. In Surah Al-Jumu'ah, they claimed spiritual authority, so the word “friends (awliya)” is used there.
“فَتَمَنَّوُا الْمَوْتَ” means: wish for death upon the liar. This interpretation has been preferred by Ibn Kathir and other views have been rejected.
[95] This is a definitive proof from the information given by Allah that they are unable to engage in mutual invocation (mubahala).
“وَلَنْ يَتَمَنَّوْهُ” — though "tamannā" generally means a wish in the heart, here it refers to requesting with the tongue.
“أَيْدِيهِمْ” — while it literally means “their hands,” it refers to their selves, since most actions are carried out by the hands, hence the term was used.
[96] This is the second reason for their denial.
“أَحْرَصَ النَّاسِ” — every human being naturally desires life, but the Jews are extremely greedy for it.
“وَمِنَ الَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا” — this refers to the Magians and the pagan Arabs, who did not believe in resurrection after death.
A lifespan of a thousand years is mentioned because at that time a common expression was, “May you be granted a thousand years of life,” and the Jews had adopted this custom from the Magians.
[97] From here up to verse 176 is the second section, concerning the truthfulness of the Messenger, containing responses to nine objections, divided into four parts.
The first part extends from this verse to verse 123. In it, five questions are answered, followed by five admonitions, then answers to two more questions, and finally five statements about prophethood.
This verse contains the answer to the first question. The objection was: “Gabriel (peace be upon him) brings revelation to you, while he is our enemy.” The reason for this hostility is that Gabriel transferred revelation from the Children of Israel to the descendants of Ismail. Because of this, they rejected the Book and the revelation brought by him.
The answer is given, and its essence is that Gabriel (peace be upon him) brought the revelation by the command of Allah. And this revelation—the Quran—has exalted qualities of truth:
1. It confirms previous scriptures (مُصَدِّق)
2. It is guidance (هُدىً)
3. It brings glad tidings (بُشْرَى)
“Glad tidings” means that when believers hear or recite it, they rejoice so deeply that the signs of joy appear clearly on their faces.
