الم 37 اَلٌبَقَرَة

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ آمِنُوا بِمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ قَالُوا نُؤْمِنُ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَيْنَا وَيَكْفُرُونَ بِمَا وَرَاءَهُ وَهُوَ الْحَقُّ مُصَدِّقًا لِمَا مَعَهُمْ قُلْ فَلِمَ تَقْتُلُونَ أَنْبِيَاءَ اللَّهِ مِنْ قَبْلُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ ﴿91﴾ وَلَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ مُوسَى بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ ثُمَّ اتَّخَذْتُمُ الْعِجْلَ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ وَأَنْتُمْ ظَالِمُونَ ﴿92﴾ وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَاقَكُمْ وَرَفَعْنَا فَوْقَكُمُ الطُّورَ خُذُوا مَا آتَيْنَاكُمْ بِقُوَّةٍ وَاسْمَعُوا قَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَعَصَيْنَا وَأُشْرِبُوا فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ الْعِجْلَ بِكُفْرِهِمْ قُلْ بِئْسَمَا يَأْمُرُكُمْ بِهِ إِيمَانُكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ ﴿93﴾

﴾91﴿ Wa izaa qeela lahum aaminoo bimaaa anzalal laahu qaaloo nu'minu bimaaa unzila 'alainaa wa yakfuroona bimaa waraaa'ahoo wa huwal haqqu musaddiqal limaa ma'ahum; qul falima taqtuloona Ambiyaaa'al laahi min qablu in kuntum mu'mineen
﴾92﴿ Wa laqad jaaa'akum Moosa bilbaiyinaati summat takhaztumul 'ijla mim ba'dihee wa antum zaalimoon
﴾93﴿ Wa iz akhaznaa meesaaqakum wa rafa'naa fawqa kumut Toora khuzoo maaa aatainaakum biquwwatinw wasma'oo qaaloo sami'naa wa 'asainaa wa ushriboo fee quloobihimul 'ijla bikufrihim; qul bi'samaa yaamurukum biheee eemaanukum in kuntum mu'mineen

﴾91﴿ And when it is said to them, “Believe in what Allah has revealed,” they say, “We believe in what was revealed to us,” and they disbelieve in what came after it, while it is the truth confirming what is with them. Say, “Then why did you kill the prophets of Allah before, if you are truly believers”
﴾92﴿ And indeed, Moses (peace be upon him) brought you clear signs and rulings, yet you took the calf as a god after that, and you were wrongdoers (by committing shirk).
﴾93﴿ And when We took a firm covenant from you and raised the mountain (Tur) above you, We said: “Hold firmly to what We have given you and listen.” They said, “We hear and we do not obey.” Love for the calf was deeply rooted in their hearts because of their disbelief. Say, “Evil is that which your faith commands you to do, if you are indeed believers.”

[91] This too is an admonition for those who make distinctions in believing in the Books of Allah, and it is a form of argumentation. They claimed belief in their own Book, so two arguments were established against them. The first: “They disbelieve in what came after it,” and the second: “Then why did you kill.” The phrase “وَهُوَ الْحَقُّ” serves as a binding proof against them: if you accept the Torah for its truth, then you must also accept the Quran. “فَلِمَ تَقْتُلُونَ” means that believing in the Torah contradicts killing the prophets, and there is a clear contradiction between the two. So if one thing is true (killing the prophets), then its opposite (belief in the Torah) cannot be true.
[92] From this verse up to verse 96 is the sixth address, in which two major corruptions are mentioned. First, there is an admonition due to shirk, then another admonition due to denial of the Book of Allah, followed by the declaration of mutual invocation of curse (mubahala). The phrase “بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ” refers to the nine miracles mentioned in Surah Al-A'raf, and also includes the eight blessings that are mentioned later in this surah. “ثُمَّ اتَّخَذْتُمُ الْعِجْلَ” — previously in verse 51 it was mentioned in the context of a blessing due to their pardon, while here it is mentioned in the context of their wickedness.
[93] In this verse, another one of their wicked acts is mentioned: turning away from the Book of Allah due to love for shirk. They said “We hear” at the time the mountain was raised, and “we disobey” either afterward, or they said the first with their tongues and the second in their hearts, or they initially accepted and later disobeyed in practice.
Note: Their disbelief in the verses of monotheism was due to love for the calf, which is shirk, and this love was also the cause of breaking the covenant and turning away from the Book of Allah. “أُشْرِبُوا” comes from “ishrab,” which means to drink deeply so that the effect reaches every part of the body—this implies strong emphasis on how deeply love for the calf was rooted in their hearts. “قُلْ بِئْسَمَا يَأْمُرُكُمْ بِهِ” is also a refutation of their claim to believe in the Torah—since worship of the calf contradicts belief, it becomes clear that their claim of faith was false.
