يُخَادِعُونَ اللَّهَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَمَا يَخْدَعُونَ إِلَّا أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ ﴿9﴾ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضًا وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ ﴿10﴾ وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَا تُفْسِدُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ قَالُوا إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُصْلِحُونَ ﴿11﴾ أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْمُفْسِدُونَ وَلَكِنْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ ﴿12﴾

﴾9﴿Yukhaadi'oonal laaha wallazeena aamanoo wa maa yakhda'oona illaaa anfusahum wa maa yash'uroon
﴾10﴿Fee quloobihim mara dun fazaadahumul laahu maradah; wa lahum 'azaabun aleemum bimaa kaanoo yakziboon
﴾11﴿Wa izaa qeela lahum laa tufsidoo fil ardi qaalooo innamaa nahnu muslihoon
﴾12﴿Alaaa innahum humul mufsidoona wa laakil laa yash'uroon

﴾9﴿ They try to deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves, and they do not realize it
﴾10﴿ Because there is a disease in their hearts, Allah increased their disease (by revealing the Quran), and for them is a painful punishment because they constantly lie
﴾11﴿ When it is said to them, “Do not cause corruption in the land,” they say, “Indeed, we are only reformers.”
﴾12﴿ Be aware that they are indeed the ones who cause corruption, but they do not realize their own corruption

[9] This verse also contains a warning for the hypocrites, mentioning two of their traits: deceit and lack of understanding. When a person performs religious acts with the intention of gaining worldly benefits—like professing faith, worship, or other deeds for payment, status, or reward—this is called deceit. “With Allah” means they think they are deceiving Allah, or it refers to deceiving His Messenger. “They only deceive themselves” means the sin of this deceit and its harmful consequences in this world and the Hereafter will fall solely upon them.
[10] This verse also contains a warning for the hypocrites, mentioning two of their traits along with two consequences—one in this world and one in the Hereafter. The “disease” in their hearts refers to doubt, hypocrisy, cowardice, envy toward the believers, inclination toward foreign women, using religion for personal gain, and inner affection for the disbelievers. These are mentioned repeatedly throughout the Quran. “So Allah increased their disease” means either it is divine instruction, a declarative statement, or that as more of the Quran is revealed, or the truth becomes clearer, or the believers advance, their hypocrisy increases in proportion. Since the revelation of the Quran is the cause, the increase is attributed to it. This is also mentioned in Surah Al-Ma’idah (verses 64 and 68), Surah At-Tawbah (verse 125), and Surah Al-Isra (verse 82). The words “they lie” and “used to” indicate that lying is their habit. This is the primary cause of their punishment and shows that lying is a major sin. In hadith, one of the signs of a hypocrite is lying.
[11] This verse also contains a warning and mentions one of their vile traits—calling corruption “reform.” Their corruption includes committing shirk, preventing people from the Quran, considering others' wealth as lawful for themselves, stealing, consuming the property of orphans, practicing magic and spells, and acting against the Sunnah and the Quran. These actions of the hypocrites are mentioned in various parts of the Quran. Calling such acts “reform” is the habit of every innovator and polytheist—they call innovation a sunnah and shirk monotheism.
[12] This verse also serves as a warning and mentions one of the vile traits of the hypocrites, which is causing corruption. In it, their strong claim of being reformers is firmly rejected. “But they do not realize” does not serve as an excuse; rather, they have deliberately abandoned the pursuit of truth.
