َقَدْ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ 1348 اَلْمُجَادَلَة

َ اتَّخَذُوا أَيْمَانَهُمْ جُنَّةً فَصَدُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُهِينٌ ﴿۱۶﴾ لَنْ تُغْنِيَ عَنْهُمْ أَمْوَالُهُمْ وَلَا أَوْلَادُهُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا أُولَئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ ﴿۱۷﴾ يَوْمَ يَبْعَثُهُمُ اللَّهُ جَمِيعًا فَيَحْلِفُونَ لَهُ كَمَا يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ وَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ عَلَى شَيْءٍ أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْكَاذِبُونَ ﴿۱۸﴾ اسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَأَنْسَاهُمْ ذِكْرَ اللَّهِ أُولَئِكَ حِزْبُ الشَّيْطَانِ أَلَا إِنَّ حِزْبَ الشَّيْطَانِ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ ﴿۱۹﴾

﴾16﴿ Ittakhazooo aymaanahum junnatan fasaddoo 'an sabeelil laahi falahum 'azaabum muheen
﴾17﴿ Lan tughniya 'anhum amwaaluhum wa laaa awladuhum minal laahi shai'aa; ulaaa 'ika As haabun Naari hum feehaa khaalidoon
﴾18﴿ Yawma yab'asuhumul laahujamee'an fa yahlifoona lahoo kamaa yahlifoona lakum wa yahsaboona annahum 'alaa shai'; alaaa innahum humul kaaziboon
﴾19﴿ Istahwaza 'alaihimush shaitaanu fa ansaahum zikral laah; ulaaa'ika hizbush shaitaaan; alaaa innaa hizbash shaitaani humul khaasiroon

﴾16﴿ They have taken their oaths as a shield and have turned away from the path of Allah, so for them is a humiliating punishment
﴾17﴿ Neither their wealth nor their children will ever avail them against Allah in any way. They are the inhabitants of the Fire; they will abide therein forever
﴾18﴿ On the day when Allah will resurrect them all, they will swear to Him just as they swear to you, thinking that they are upon something. Behold, indeed, they are the liars
﴾19﴿ Satan has overcome them and made them forget the remembrance of Allah. They are the party of Satan. Behold, indeed, the party of Satan is the true loser

[16] This sentence answers a possible question: if they know the truth, then why do they swear falsely? So the verse provides the answer.
Additionally, this sentence is an explanation of “evil indeed is what they used to do” — and in it, two more disgraceful traits of theirs are mentioned.
The final sentence contains a warning. Since they insult the name of Allah by swearing falsely and also disrespect the believers, the verse mentions “a humiliating punishment” as their consequence.
[17] This is an otherworldly warning through the mention of two of their disgraceful traits. It is also a refutation of those who take pride and arrogance in their wealth and children.
“Their wealth” — will be of no benefit in paying ransom or offering bribes.
“Nor their children” — the word “lā” is repeated for emphasis, strongly negating both.
Children will not be able to help, neither by support in this world nor by making du‘ā or performing good deeds to benefit their (polytheist) parents in the Hereafter.
[18] In this verse, three disgraceful traits of theirs are mentioned.
“Just as they swear to you” — meaning, they were accustomed to false oaths in the world.
Ibn Kathīr said: Whoever spends his life upon a certain deed will die upon it, and will be resurrected upon it.
[19] In this verse, three more disgraceful traits of theirs are mentioned:
“Istahwaz” is derived from khawdh, meaning to take control of or to drive quickly and forcefully — implying dominance and strength. It means the devils have gained such power and control over them in spreading whispers and misguidance that it's as if he is their king and they are his subjects.
“So he made them forget the remembrance of Allah” — this includes Allah’s commands and prohibitions, the Noble Qur’an, and pure monotheism.
“The party of Shayṭān” — ḥizb refers to loyal followers who are firmly devoted to their leader, hold to him with fanaticism, do not turn away easily, and do not listen to anyone else’s word.
