[38,39,40] (لِأَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ) – In hadith, it is established that the men of Paradise will also be 33 years old.
(الْأَوَّلِينَ) – refers either to the previous nations or to the era of the Companions of this Ummah.
(الْآخِرِينَ) – refers either to the rest of this Ummah or to the people who came later in this Ummah.
[41] This is the beginning of the warning about the Hereafter, mentioning six of their conditions along with three reasons (causes) for them.
[42,43,44] (سَمُومٍ) – refers to intensely hot wind that penetrates the pores of the body.
(ظِلٍّ) – the word shade is used mockingly, meaning the black smoke appears like shade.
(يَحْمُومٍ) – extremely black smoke, indicating that Hell itself is dark, its smoke is black, and the faces of its people are blackened, because their beliefs and deeds in the world were dark and corrupt.
(وَلَا كَرِيمٍ) – refers to something of no benefit, and also something that lacks a pleasant and beautiful appearance—meaning it lacks the essential qualities of true shade.
[45] This is the first cause of their punishment: al-mutrifeen (مُتْرَفِينَ). Itraf refers to excessive indulgence in worldly blessings, pleasures, and desires, to the point that a person becomes completely heedless of religion and arrogant toward monotheism and the Sunnah.
Qurtubi restricted the meaning of itraaf to wealth obtained through unlawful means.
This also alludes to the capitalist system, which is the root of all disbeliefs.
[46] This mentions the second cause, which is a common disease among the polytheists, whether they are wealthy or poor.
(yusirroon - يُصِرُّونَ) refers to persistence in sin without repentance, and even considering the sin to be a righteous act.
(al-hinth - الْحِنْثِ) means more than just a sin; it carries the meaning of breaking a covenant, so it specifically refers to major sins and is not used for minor ones.
(al-‘azheem - الْعَظِيمِ) is mentioned because there are levels among major sins, and this word indicates that the greatest of the major sins is intended, which is shirk (associating partners with Allah).
