َقَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ 1302 القمر
َ كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ ﴿۱۸﴾ إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِي يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُسْتَمِرٍّ ﴿۱۹﴾ تَنْزِعُ النَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ مُنْقَعِرٍ ﴿۲۰﴾ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ ﴿۲۱﴾ وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِنْ مُدَّكِرٍ ﴿۲۲﴾ كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِالنُّذُرِ ﴿۲۳﴾ فَقَالُوا أَبَشَرًا مِنَّا وَاحِدًا نَتَّبِعُهُ إِنَّا إِذًا لَفِي ضَلَالٍ وَسُعُرٍ ﴿۲۴﴾
﴾18﴿ Kazzabat 'Aadun fakaifa kaana 'azaabee wa nuzur
﴾19﴿ Innaa arsalnaa 'alaihim reehan sarsaran fee Yawmi nahsin mustamirr
﴾20﴿ Tanzi'un naasa ka annahum a'jaazu nakhlin munqa'ir
﴾21﴿ Fakaifa kaana 'azaabee wa nuzur
﴾22﴿ Wa laqad yassarnal Qur'aana liz zikri fahal min muddakir
﴾23﴿ Kazzabat Samoodu binnuzur
﴾24﴿ Faqaalooo a' basharan minnaa waahidan nattabi'uhooo innaa izal lafee dalaalinw wa su'ur
﴾18﴿ The people of ‘Ad denied, so how was My punishment and My warning
﴾19﴿ And indeed, We sent upon them a furious wind on a continuous ominous day
﴾20﴿ It would sweep the people away as if they were trunks of date palms uprooted from their roots
﴾21﴿ So how was My punishment and My warning
﴾22﴿ And indeed, We have made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there anyone who will take heed
﴾23﴿ The Thamud denied the warners
﴾24﴿ So they said, Shall we follow a single man from among us? Then indeed, we would be in error and madness
[18] This is the second event—the people of ‘Ād denied Hud (peace be upon him).
The verb (كَذَّبَتْ) is used in the feminine form because it refers to the tribe of ‘Ād, and using the feminine form here implies humiliation and belittlement of that nation.
[19,20] This is the detailed description of the punishment of the people of ‘Ād.
(يَوْمِ) – The punishment lasted for seven nights and eight days, as mentioned in Surah Al-Haqqah (7). So here, the word “yawm” refers either to a type of day (a recurring time of punishment) or to time in general.
(نَحْسٍ) – The evil omen or inauspiciousness of that time was specific to them due to the punishment they received.
(مُسْتَمِرٍّ) – Meaning that the effects of this punishment continue—first in the Barzakh (intermediate life after death) and later until the Resurrection.
As for the idea that Wednesday is an inauspicious day—there is no authentic, connected hadith established regarding the inauspiciousness of Wednesday.
[21,22] In this story, the first sentence is repeated to emphasize the severity of their punishment.
Or, the first instance is mentioned along with its cause (their denial), and the second instance is mentioned after detailing the punishment—to encourage taking heed and drawing a lesson from it.
[23] This is the third story.
(نُّذُرِ) – is the plural of nadhīr (warner), meaning messengers, because denying one messenger is considered as denying all of them.
Or, nadhīr here is in the sense of a verbal noun, referring to the repeated warnings that Sālih (peace be upon him) gave them from time to time.
[24,25] This is their denial, and it includes seven expressions of denial.
(أَأُلْقِيَ الذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ بَيْنِنَا) – They said: We are wealthier and better than him, so why has he been singled out with revelation?
The sixth accusation is that he is a liar (کذاب).
