بَلْ ظَنَنْتُمْ أَنْ لَنْ يَنْقَلِبَ الرَّسُولُ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِلَى أَهْلِيهِمْ أَبَدًا وَزُيِّنَ ذَلِكَ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ وَظَنَنْتُمْ ظَنَّ السَّوْءِ وَكُنْتُمْ قَوْمًا بُورًا ﴿۱۲﴾ وَمَنْ لَمْ يُؤْمِنْ بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ فَإِنَّا أَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَافِرِينَ سَعِيرًا ﴿۱۳﴾ وَلِلَّهِ مُلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ يَغْفِرُ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيُعَذِّبُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا ﴿۱۴﴾ سَيَقُولُ الْمُخَلَّفُونَ إِذَا انْطَلَقْتُمْ إِلَى مَغَانِمَ لِتَأْخُذُوهَا ذَرُونَا نَتَّبِعْكُمْ يُرِيدُونَ أَنْ يُبَدِّلُوا كَلَامَ اللَّهِ قُلْ لَنْ تَتَّبِعُونَا كَذَلِكُمْ قَالَ اللَّهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ فَسَيَقُولُونَ بَلْ تَحْسُدُونَنَا بَلْ كَانُوا لَا يَفْقَهُونَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا ﴿۱۵﴾
﴾12﴿ Bal zanantum al lany yanqalibar Rasoolu walmu'minoona ilaaa ahleehim abadanw wa zuyyina zaalika fee quloobikum wa zanantum zannnas saw'i wa kuntum qawmam booraa
﴾13﴿ Wa mal lam yu'mim billaahi wa Rasoolihee fainnaaa a'tadnaa lilkaafireena sa'eeraa
﴾14﴿ Wa lillaahii mulkus samaawaati wal ard; yaghfiru limany yashaaa'u wa yu'azzibu many yashaaa'; wa kaanal laahu Ghafoorar Raheemaa
﴾15﴿ Sa yaqoolul mukhalla foona izan talaqtum ilaa maghaanima litaakhuzoohaa zaroonaa nattabi'kum yureedoona any yubaddiloo Kalaamallaah; qul lan tattabi'oonaa kazaalikum qaalal laahu min qablu fasa yaqooloona bal tahsudoonanna; bal kaanoo laa yafqahoona illaa qaleela
﴾12﴿ Rather, you assumed that the Prophet and the believers would never return to their families, and that assumption was made pleasing in your hearts. You assumed an evil assumption and became a doomed people
﴾13﴿ And whoever does not believe in Allah and His Messenger, then indeed, We have prepared a blazing fire for the disbelievers
﴾14﴿ And to Allah alone belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills, and Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful
﴾15﴿ Sa yaqoolul mukhalla foona izan talaqtum ilaa maghaanima litaakhuzoohaa zaroonaa nattabi'kum yureedoona any yubaddiloo Kalaamallaah; qul lan tattabi'oonaa kazaalikum qaalal laahu min qablu fasa yaqooloona bal tahsudoonanna; bal kaanoo laa yafqahoona illaa qaleela
[12] This too is a rebuke, in which four faults of the hypocrites are mentioned. The word (بَلْ) indicates intensification — meaning: in addition to their hypocrisy and jealousy, they are also immersed in corrupt assumptions.
(أَنْ لَنْ يَنْقَلِبَ) — this means: they believed that the Prophet and the believers would not return victorious, because they considered the status of the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) and the believers as low, and saw the polytheists as superior.
(ظَنَّ السَّوْءِ) — here it refers to the belief that Allah would not support His Messenger and the believers, because they assumed the Prophet and his followers were on a false religion.
[13] This is a warning of the Hereafter, indicating that the hypocrites do not possess true Shar‘ī (legitimate) faith — therefore, they are considered disbelievers.
[14] This is a mention of Tawḥīd through the mention of Allah’s attributes, and its purpose is to encourage repentance — that if you repent from hypocrisy, Allah the Exalted will forgive you.
[15] In this verse, there is a rebuke by mentioning four evils of the hypocrites.
(إِلَى مَغَانِمَ لِتَأْخُذُوهَا) — this refers to the spoils of Khaybar, and this phrasing indicates that the battle of Khaybar involved little hardship, and its victory was easy and certain.
When the noble Companions returned from the journey of Ḥudaybiyyah, they had endured great trials, and the intended goal (ʿUmrah) had not been fulfilled. Their hearts were filled with sorrow. To remove that sorrow, Allah the Exalted commanded the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) to take those Companions who had participated in Ḥudaybiyyah on the expedition to Khaybar, and not to permit others.
(ذَرُونَا نَتَّبِعْكُمْ) — because the conquest of Khaybar was expected to be easy and the acquisition of spoils was certain, the hypocrites demanded to join the expedition.
(كَلَامَ اللَّهِ) — this refers to the declaration mentioned in the following two statements:
(قُلْ لَنْ تَتَّبِعُونَا كَذَلِكُمْ قَالَ اللَّهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ) — some commentators say that this refers to Allah’s promise to the people of Ḥudaybiyyah, that they alone will receive the spoils of Khaybar. Others say it refers to Allah’s command to the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) that only the participants of Ḥudaybiyyah should go to Khaybar.
In both views, the expression "Kalam Allah" (the word of Allah) is applied to hidden revelation (waḥy khafī) — showing that even hadith is part of Allah’s word.
(فَسَيَقُولُونَ بَلْ تَحْسُدُونَنَا) — the hypocrites accused the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) and the noble Companions of envy (ḥasad).
Ḥasad means: wishing for the removal of Allah’s blessing from someone, and striving to bring about that removal.
Ḥasad in any form is a major sin.
