﴾72﴿ It will be said, Enter the gates of Hell, to abide therein forever. And what a terrible dwelling place for the arrogant
﴾73﴿ And those who feared their Lord will be led to Paradise in groups until, when they reach it, while its gates have already been opened, its keepers will say to them, Peace be upon you, You have done well, so enter it to abide eternally
﴾74﴿ And they will say, All praise is due to Allah, who has fulfilled His promise to us and made us inherit the land of Paradise so that we may settle in it wherever we wish. So how excellent is the reward of those who do good
﴾75﴿ And you will see the angels surrounding the Throne, glorifying with praise of their Lord. And it will be judged between them in truth, and it will be said, "All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds
[72] After the establishment of proof against them, the judgment of entry into Hell is issued.
"Al-Mutakabbirīn" (the arrogant)—the cause of the punishment is their disbelief (kufr), and the cause of their humiliation, as mentioned in these verses, is their arrogance.
For this reason, this particular trait of theirs—arrogance—is highlighted.
[73] This is a detailed glad tiding of the Hereafter. The phrase "wa sīqa" (وَسِيقَ) appeared earlier as well, but there it referred to a driving marked by humiliation and disgrace, while here it is a driving marked by honor and dignity. Most commentators have said that in this context, the driving refers to the believers being mounted and escorted into Paradise.
"Zumarā" (زُمَرًا) means they are in groups—these groups are either the nations of each Prophet kept separate, or it refers to people with different types of deeds, such as martyrs, scholars, those who invited and conveyed the message of Islam, and others. Each person will proceed in the category that dominated their character.
"Wa futiḥat" (وَفُتِحَتْ)—meaning, when they arrive, they will be welcomed with many blessings. One of these special blessings is the opening of the gates (of Paradise), indicating their honor and dignity, as the gates will already be open before they even arrive—just like it was mentioned in Surah Ṣād (38:50).
[74] This is also included in the glad tidings. "Al-arḍ" (الْأَرْضَ) refers to Paradise. It is called an inheritance because it is received through a cause that is not directly proportional to the effort made—meaning, the reward of Paradise is far greater than the effort, even though the effort is necessary and appropriate.
[75] This mentions the greatness and awe of the Day of Judgment. "Min ḥawli al-‘arsh" (مِنْ حَوْلِ الْعَرْشِ)—the word "min" indicates that the angels are around the Throne, but they cannot completely surround it due to the immense greatness of the Throne.
