﴾57﴿ Aw taqoola law annal laaha hadaanee lakuntu minal muttaqeen
﴾58﴿ Aw taqoola heena taral 'azaaba law anna lee karratan fa akoona minal muhsineen
﴾59﴿ Balaa qad jaaa'atka aayaatee fa kazzabta bihaa wa stakbarta wa kunta minal kaafireen
﴾60﴿ Wa Yawmal Qiyaamati taral lazeena kazaboo 'alallaahi wujoohuhum muswaddah; alaisa fee Jahannama maswal lilmutakabbireen
﴾61﴿ Wa yunajjil laahul lazee nat taqaw bimafaazatihim laa yamassuhumus sooo'u wa laa hum yahzanoon
﴾62﴿ Allaahu khaaliqu kulli shai'inw wa Huwa 'alaa kulli shai'inw Wakeel
﴾57﴿ Or (so that it may not) say, If Allah had guided me, I would surely have been among the righteous
﴾58﴿ Or (so that it may not) say when it sees the punishment, If only I had another chance, I would be among the doers of good
﴾59﴿ Yes, indeed! My signs came to you, but you denied them, acted arrogantly, and were among the disbelievers
﴾60﴿ And on the Day of Judgment, you will see those who lied against Allah—their faces will be blackened. Is there not in Hell a dwelling place for the arrogant
﴾61﴿ And Allah will save those who were mindful (of Him) due to their success; no harm will touch them, nor will they grieve
﴾62﴿ Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the Maintainer over everything
[57] This is the second excuse—meaning that if Allah, the Exalted, had not guided through sending the Qur'an, then these people would have made the excuse: "O Allah, You should have guided us."
However, since the Qur'an has been revealed as guidance, now they can no longer present this argument (excuse).
[58] This is the third excuse—meaning that if the Qur'an had not been revealed and they had asked to return to the world, then it would have been their right, and Allah, the Exalted, would have accepted that right.
But since the Qur'an has been revealed and they were given sufficient lifespan—and yet they did not accept the Qur'an—then if, on the Day of Judgment, they say: “Send me back to the world so that I may believe,” this request will not be accepted.
Rather, they will be given the same response that has already been mentioned in Surah Fatir (35:37).
[59] This is the response to these claims—because when they present these excuses on the Day of Judgment, Allah, the Exalted, will say to them that these excuses are not accepted.
The reason is that Our signs (verses) had come to you, but you had denied them.
[60] After mentioning the refutation of excuses, the punishment of the Hereafter is mentioned—meaning that their guilt is confirmed, and their excuses have come to an end.
So they will be disgraced and humiliated, and their faces will be darkened.
"Alladhīna kadhabū ʿalā Allah" (those who lied against Allah) includes the polytheists who attribute partners and children to Allah, the Exalted.
Baqāʿī has said that this also includes the Muʿtazilites and those who lie while thinking that Allah, the Exalted, is unaware of their lies—they too fall under this category.
[61] In this verse, there is glad tidings.
[62] This is the seventh rational argument, and it includes two general attributes:
Creating everything and safeguarding and guaranteeing everything.
These are reasons that lead to taqwā (God-consciousness).
