﴾48﴿ Wa badaa lahum saiyiaatu maa kasaboo wa haaqa bihim maa kaanoo bihee yastahzi'oon
﴾49﴿ Fa izaa massal insaana durrun da'aanaa summa izaa khawwalnaahu ni'matam minna qaala innamaaa ootee tuhoo 'alaa 'ilm; bal hiya fitna tunw wa laakinna aksarahum laa ya'lamoon
﴾50﴿ Qad qaalahal lazeena min qablihim famaaa aghnaa 'anhum maa kaanoo yaksiboon
﴾51﴿ Fa asaabahum saiyi aatu maa kasaboo; wallazeena zalamoo min haaa'ulaaa'i sa yuseebuhum saiyi aatu maa kasaboo wa maa hum bimu'jizeen

﴾48﴿ And the evil consequences of what they did will appear to them, and they will be engulfed by that which they used to ridicule
﴾49﴿ But when hardship touches man, he calls upon Us. Then, when We grant him a favor from Us, he says, "I have been given this only because of my knowledge." Rather, it is a trial, but most of them do not know
﴾50﴿ Indeed, those before them said the same words, but their deeds did not avail them against the punishment
﴾51﴿ Then the evil consequences of what they did overtook them. And those who do wrong among these present people—soon the evil consequences of what they have earned will reach them, and they cannot escape (Allah's punishment)

[49] This torment is due to the betrayal of other polytheists. (ʿAlā ʿilmin) means that Allah, the Exalted, knew that I was worthy and deserving of this blessing. Or it means that whenever a blessing is attained, he attributes it to his own efforts and struggles, and considers his hardship to be the sole cause—just like a materialist (disbeliever) says such things.
[50,51] This warning is given by mentioning the state of those who came before, as this phrase "Uteetuhu ʿalā ʿilmin" ("I was given it because of knowledge") was the cause of punishment for previous deniers—just as Qarun had said similarly, as mentioned in Surah Al-Qasas (28:78).
"Sayuseebuhum sayyiātumā kasabū" ("The evil consequences of what they earned will strike them") refers to the punishment of famine that had come upon the people of Mecca.
For this reason, after that, both the constriction and expansion of provision (rizq) are mentioned.
