هَذِهِ جَهَنَّمُ الَّتِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ ﴿۶۳﴾ اصْلَوْهَا الْيَوْمَ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ ﴿۶۴﴾ الْيَوْمَ نَخْتِمُ عَلَى أَفْوَاهِهِمْ وَتُكَلِّمُنَا أَيْدِيهِمْ وَتَشْهَدُ أَرْجُلُهُمْ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ ﴿۶۵﴾ وَلَوْ نَشَاءُ لَطَمَسْنَا عَلَى أَعْيُنِهِمْ فَاسْتَبَقُوا الصِّرَاطَ فَأَنَّى يُبْصِرُونَ ﴿۶۶﴾ وَلَوْ نَشَاءُ لَمَسَخْنَاهُمْ عَلَى مَكَانَتِهِمْ فَمَا اسْتَطَاعُوا مُضِيًّا وَلَا يَرْجِعُونَ ﴿۶۷﴾ وَمَنْ نُعَمِّرْهُ نُنَكِّسْهُ فِي الْخَلْقِ أَفَلَا يَعْقِلُونَ ﴿۶۸﴾
﴾63﴿ Haazihee Jahannamul latee kuntum too'adoon
﴾64﴿ Islawhal Yawma bimaa kuntum takfuroon
﴾65﴿ Al-Yawma nakhtimu 'alaaa afwaahihim wa tukallimunaaa aideehim wa tashhadu arjuluhum bimaa kaanoo yaksiboon
﴾66﴿ Wa law nashaaa'u lata masna 'alaaa aiyunihim fasta baqus-siraata fa-annaa yubsiroon
﴾67﴿ Wa law nashaaa'u lamasakhnaahum 'alaa makaanatihim famas-tataa'oo mudiyyanw-wa laa yarji'oon
﴾68﴿ Wa man nu 'ammirhu nunakkishu fil-khalq; afalaa ya'qiloon
﴾63﴿ This is Hell, which you were promised
﴾64﴿ Enter it today because you used to disbelieve
﴾65﴿ Today We will seal their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will bear witness to what they used to earn
﴾66﴿ And if we willed, we could obliterate their eyes, then they would race to the path, but how would they see
﴾67﴿ And if We willed, We could transform their faces, then they would remain in their places, unable to move forward or turn back
﴾68﴿ And whomever We grant a long life, We reverse them in creation (weaken them in body and mind). Do they not then understand
[63,64] This means that Hell will be made visible to them, and such an address will be made to them.
From this, it becomes clear that the previous state was the scene of gathering (میدان حشر), and after that, they will be cast into Hell.
[65] In this warning, there is a subtle indication that Allah the Exalted will not judge in the Hereafter based solely on His knowledge, but rather, just as in worldly courts, the judgment will be based on confessions and testimonies.
"الْيَوْمَ نَخْتِمُ عَلَى أَفْوَاهِهِمْ"—the well-known interpretation is that they will deny their shirk, as seen in Surah Al-Anʿām (6:23) and Surah Ghāfir (40:74).
But this denial is a lie, so their mouths will be sealed.
Another reason given is that non-verbal confession (i.e., by limbs) serves as an even stronger proof than verbal confession—because the body cannot lie, whereas the tongue can.
[66] This is a worldly warning (تخویف دنیوی).
Its connection to the previous verse is that—after mentioning the sealing of mouths in the Hereafter, this verse shows that Allah is also capable of blinding their eyes in this world if He wills.
"لَطَمَسْنَا"—the word ṭams originally refers to a type of blindness in which even the eye socket is erased, along with eyebrows and eyelashes, leaving a smooth, featureless surface.
This emphasizes the absolute power of Allah over His creation in both this world and the next.
[67] This is the second worldly warning (تخویف دنیوی دوم).
In the previous verse, only the blinding (طمس) of the eyes was mentioned while the human form remained intact.
But in this verse, the warning is of complete transformation (مسخ)—meaning the entire human form would be changed, either into stone, or into monkey or pig-like forms.
This serves as a strong reminder of Allah’s power to punish even in this world through physical transformation.
[68] This is a supporting proof for the previous warning—that Allah the Exalted has the power to remove strength.
This is evident in old age, where all external and internal faculties gradually weaken and fade.
However, the prophets (علیهم السلام) are protected from such decline.
"الْخَلْقِ" here refers to the form, limbs, and physical and mental strengths of a person.
It highlights that just as Allah granted these faculties, He can also weaken or take them away whenever He wills.
