وَمَنْ يَقْنُتَْْ 1023 الأحزاب

وَإِذْ تَقُولُ لِلَّذِي أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْسِكْ عَلَيْكَ زَوْجَكَ وَاتَّقِ اللَّهَ وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ مَا اللَّهُ مُبْدِيهِ وَتَخْشَى النَّاسَ وَاللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَنْ تَخْشَاهُ فَلَمَّا قَضَى زَيْدٌ مِنْهَا وَطَرًا زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا لِكَيْ لَا يَكُونَ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ حَرَجٌ فِي أَزْوَاجِ أَدْعِيَائِهِمْ إِذَا قَضَوْا مِنْهُنَّ وَطَرًا وَكَانَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ مَفْعُولًا ﴿۳۷﴾

﴾37﴿ Wa iz taqoolu lillazeee an'amal laahu 'alaihi wa an'amta 'alaihi amsik 'alaika zawjaka wattaqil laaha wa tukhfee fee nafsika mal laahu mubdeehi wa takhshan naasa wallaahu ahaqqu an takhshaah; falammaa qadaa Zaidum minhaa wataran zawwajnaa kahaa likay laa yakoona 'alal mu'mineena harajun feee azwaaji ad'iyaaa'ihim izaa qadaw minhunna wataraa; wa kaana amrul laahi maf'oolaa

﴾37﴿ And [remember] when you said to the one upon whom Allah, the Exalted, had bestowed favor and you had bestowed favor: "Keep your wife to yourself and fear Allah." And you concealed within yourself that which Allah was to reveal, and you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him. So when Zayd had completely fulfilled his need from her, We married her to you so that there would be no difficulty upon the believers concerning the marriage of the wives of their adopted sons when they have fulfilled their need from them. And the command of Allah, the Exalted, has been fulfilled

[37] This verse is an address to the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace), as indicated by the words "takhshāhā" and "zawwajnākahā", which directly address him.
The verse refers to certain events related to Zayd ibn Ḥārithah:
Zayd, in his childhood, was traveling with his mother when a group of wrongdoers abducted him and brought him to the Ukāẓ market, announcing him as a slave for sale. Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām, a trade agent for Khadījah (may Allah be pleased with her), bought him for 400 dirhams.
When Khadījah married the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace), she gifted Zayd to him.
Later, Zayd’s father and relatives came searching for him and arrived in Makkah. They found Zayd with the Prophet and requested to take him back. The Prophet replied, “Ask Zayd. If he wants to go with you, I will not stop him.”
Zayd said, “I do not prefer anyone over the Messenger of Allah — not even my father and brothers.”
So, the Prophet freed him and, following the custom of the time, adopted him, saying, “Zayd is now my son.” After that, people began calling him Zayd ibn Muhammad.
Later, the Prophet married Zayd to Zaynab bint Jaḥsh (may Allah be pleased with her). However, the marriage did not work out well due to personal incompatibilities. Zayd expressed a desire to divorce her, but the Prophet advised him: "Amsik ‘alayka zawjak" — “Keep your wife and fear Allah.”
At this time, through revelation, the Prophet already knew that after Zayd's divorce, he would marry Zaynab — but he feared the reaction of the hypocrites and polytheists who would say, “He has married the wife of his (adopted) son!”
So, the Prophet kept this matter hidden in his heart, as mentioned in: "Wa tukhfī fī nafsika mā Allāhu mubdīhi" — “You concealed in yourself what Allah was going to reveal.”
Eventually, Zayd divorced her, her waiting period (‘iddah) completed, and Allah Himself married Zaynab to the Prophet through revelation.
Thus, "Wa-Allāhu aḥaqqu an takhshāh" — “Allah has more right that you fear Him” — means that fear of Allah should take precedence over fear of people’s accusations or opinions.
