﴾55﴿ Wa Yawma taqoomus Saa'atu yuqsimul mujrimoona maa labisoo ghaira saa'ah; kazaalika kaanoo yu'fakoon
﴾56﴿ Wa qaalal lazeena ootul 'ilma wal eemaana laqad labistum fee kitaabil laahi ilaa yawmil ba'si fahaazaa yawmul ba'si wa laakinnakum kuntum laa ta'lamoon
﴾57﴿ Fa Yawma'izil laa yanfa'ul lazeena zalamoo ma'ziratu hum wa laa hum yusta'taboon
﴾58﴿ Wa laqad darabnaa linnaasi fee haazal Quraani min kulli masal; wa la'in ji'tahum bi aayatil la yaqoolannal lazeena kafaroo in antum illaa mubtiloon
﴾59﴿ Kazaalika yatba'ul laahu 'alaa quloobil lazeena laa ya'lamoon
﴾60﴿ Fasbir inna wa'dal laahi haqqunw wa laa yastakhif fannakal lazeena laa yooqinoon
﴾55﴿ And on the Day when the Resurrection is established, the criminals will swear that they did not remain except for an hour. Thus they were turned away from the truth
﴾56﴿ And those who have been given knowledge and faith will say, Indeed, you have remained as decreed by Allah until the Day of Resurrection. This is the Day of Resurrection, but you did not know
﴾57﴿ On that Day, the excuses of the wrongdoers will not benefit them, nor will their repentance be accepted
﴾58﴿ And indeed, We have explained to the people in this Qur'an every kind of example. Yet if you bring them a sign, those who disbelieve will surely say, You are nothing but falsifiers
﴾59﴿ Thus, Allah seals the hearts of those who do not know
﴾60﴿ So be patient; indeed, the promise of Allah is true. And let not those who lack certainty discourage you
[55] This is a warning about the Hereafter, meaning that from the previous verse it is understood that this human has lived through life until old age in this world. However, due to the awe and terror of the Day of Judgment—or because of their stubbornness and opposition—they deny or swear oaths.
[56] This is a refutation of their denial. “Those who were given knowledge and faith”—since detailed faith cannot be attained without the knowledge of the Qur'an and Sunnah, knowledge is therefore mentioned before faith. “In the Book of Allah” refers either to the Book of Predestination or to the knowledge of Allah.
[57] This is also part of the warning, meaning that after the testimony of the people of knowledge, none of their excuses will be accepted. “And they will not be asked to appease” is derived from “‘Utba,” meaning to return, and the intended meaning is repentance—meaning repentance will not be sought from them. Or it is derived from “‘Itab,” meaning to appease—meaning they will not be able to attain the satisfaction of Allah.
[58] In this, the beginning is encouragement, and the ending is a warning for the deniers—meaning that excuses will not benefit them in any way, because Allah, through the means of the Qur'an, has eliminated their excuses, yet they continued to deny.
[59]
[60] This is a consolation to the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) and a conclusion to the entire surah. It means that since the surah presented detailed evidences, examples, warnings, and more—and yet these deniers still persist in opposition and stubbornness—then be patient with their denial. “And let them not cause you to lose resolve” refers to the impatience that leads to hastily wishing for punishment or abandoning the mission of calling and conveying.
