﴾59﴿ Thus We did, and We made them (the possessions) an inheritance for the Children of Israel
﴾60﴿ So the Pharaoh and his people pursued them at the time of sunrise
﴾61﴿ So when the two groups faced each other, the companions of Moses (peace be upon him) said, Indeed, we are surely overtaken
﴾62﴿ Moses (peace be upon him) said, "Never! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will surely guide me
﴾63﴿ So We revealed to Moses (peace be upon him), "Strike the sea with your staff." Then it parted, and each part became like a great mountain
﴾64﴿ And We brought the others (Pharaoh and his people) near to that place
﴾65﴿ And We saved Moses (peace be upon him) and those with him, all of them
﴾66﴿ Then We drowned the others
[60] It is the habit of irreligious people to remain asleep until near sunrise.
[61,62] The word "ma‘iya" (with me) was mentioned in the singular form because the consideration of companionship was not entirely based on the Israelites; rather, our Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace), in a similar situation, relied on a single companion, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Hence, the singular form was used, as in Surah At-Tawbah (9:40).
If one asks: Wasn’t Harun (peace be upon him) with Musa (peace be upon him)? Shouldn’t he have been mentioned too?
The answer is: The one who said “Indeed, we will be overtaken!” were only the Israelites, expressing complaint. Harun (peace be upon him) did not express such a complaint.
[63] This is the miracle of Musa (peace be upon him), and he has no control over it because he was dependent on revelation.
[64] In these verses, the punishment of drowning is mentioned. The phrase "wa azlafnā thamma" indicates that they entered the pathways within the sea.
