ْقَالَ أَلَمْ 744 طٰهٰ
فَأُلْقِيَ السَّحَرَةُ سُجَّدًا قَالُوا آمَنَّا بِرَبِّ هَارُونَ وَمُوسَى ﴿۷۰﴾ قَالَ آمَنْتُمْ لَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ آذَنَ لَكُمْ إِنَّهُ لَكَبِيرُكُمُ الَّذِي عَلَّمَكُمُ السِّحْرَ فَلَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَيْدِيَكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ مِنْ خِلَافٍ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ فِي جُذُوعِ النَّخْلِ وَلَتَعْلَمُنَّ أَيُّنَا أَشَدُّ عَذَابًا وَأَبْقَى ﴿۷۱﴾ قَالُوا لَنْ نُؤْثِرَكَ عَلَى مَا جَاءَنَا مِنَ الْبَيِّنَاتِ وَالَّذِي فَطَرَنَا فَاقْضِ مَا أَنْتَ قَاضٍ إِنَّمَا تَقْضِي هَذِهِ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا ﴿۷۲﴾ إِنَّا آمَنَّا بِرَبِّنَا لِيَغْفِرَ لَنَا خَطَايَانَا وَمَا أَكْرَهْتَنَا عَلَيْهِ مِنَ السِّحْرِ وَاللَّهُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَى ﴿۷۳﴾
﴾70﴿ Fa ulqiyas saharatu sujjadan qaalooo aamannaa bi Rabbi Haaroona wa Moosa
﴾71﴿ Qaala aamantum lahoo qabla an aazana lakum; innahoo lakabeerukumul lazee 'allama kumus sihra fala uqatti'anna aidiyakum wa arjulakum min khilaafinw wa la usallibannakum fee juzoo'in nakhli wa lata'lamunna aiyunaaa ashaddu 'azaabanw wa abqaa
﴾72﴿ Qaaloo lan nu'siraka 'alaa maa jaaa'anaa minal baiyinaati wallazee fataranaa faqdimaaa anta qaad; innamaa taqdee haazihil hayaatad dunyaa
﴾73﴿ Innaaa aamannaa bi Rabbinaa liyaghfira lanaa khataayaanaa wa maaa akrahtanaa 'alaihi minas sihr; wallaahu khairunw wa abqaa
﴾70﴿ So the magicians were cast down in prostration, and they said, We have believed in the Lord of Moses and Aaron
﴾71﴿ Pharaoh said, Have you believed in him before I gave you permission? Indeed, he is your superior who has taught you sorcery. So, I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will certainly crucify you on the trunks of palm trees. And you will surely know which of us has a more severe and lasting punishment
﴾72﴿ They said, We will never prefer you over the clear proofs that have come to us and over the One who created us. So decree whatever you will decree; you can only decree regarding this worldly life
﴾73﴿ Indeed, we have believed in our Lord so that He may forgive us our sins and what you compelled us to do of magic. And Allah is better and more enduring
[70] The word "ulqiya" (was cast) indicates that the miracle of Musa (peace be upon him) was a clear proof of the oneness of Allah the Exalted, which compelled them to prostrate and believe. That is why the passive form (āmannā) (we believed) is used — it points to the fact that their prostration was due to faith, not out of habit or natural impulse.
Note: In other surahs, Musa (peace be upon him) is mentioned first and Harun (peace be upon him) after him. But here, Harun (peace be upon him) is mentioned first. One reason is the rhyme scheme of the verses, and secondly, in this surah, the focus is on mentioning the status of Harun (peace be upon him). As he was asked about his prophethood, both of them were referred to as messengers using the dual form. Then the purity of Harun (peace be upon him) is mentioned in the verse "wa laqad qāla lahum Hārūn..." (Indeed, Harun had said to them...).
[71] In this verse, it mentions first Pharaoh’s rebuke to the magicians for believing without his permission. Then it presents his false claim — that Musa (peace be upon him) is their teacher — even though these magicians existed and practiced magic before Musa (peace be upon him) came to Egypt.
The phrase (Ayyunā ashaddu) — “which of us is stronger” — refers to the soul (life) of Pharaoh and the Lord of Musa (peace be upon him).
Then, in three statements, the pressure Pharaoh exerted on the magicians through threats of punishment is described.
[72] In this verse, the courage of the magicians after their belief is mentioned.
“Wa-alladhī faṭaranā” has two meanings:
The first meaning is that we do not prefer you over the One who created us.
The second meaning is that it is an oath: By the One who created us.
And the point of the last sentence is that your power is limited to this world and does not extend to the Hereafter.
[73] In this verse, there is evidence that by believing, all past sins are forgiven.
The meaning of (wa mā akrahtanā) is that when the magicians recognized the prophethood of Musa (peace be upon him) before confronting him, they refused to oppose him. So Pharaoh forced them to perform magic.
Or it may mean that Pharaoh had imposed the teaching of magic by force within his kingdom.
(Wallāhu khayrun wa abqā) has two meanings:
One meaning is that obedience to Allah the Exalted is better, and its reward is everlasting.
The second meaning is that Allah the Exalted is better when obeyed, and His punishment is not everlasting — it does not remain — when He is disobeyed.
