﴾28﴿ Wa iz qaala Rabbuka lilmalaaa' ikati innee khaaliqum basharam min salsaalim min hama im masnoon
﴾29﴿ Fa izaa sawwaituhoo wa nafakhtu feehi mir roohee faqa'oo lahoo saajideen
﴾30﴿ Fasajadal malaaa'ikatu kulluhum ajma'oo
﴾31﴿ Illaaa ibleesa abaaa ai yakoona ma'as saajideen
﴾32﴿ Qaala yaaa Ibleesu maa laka allaa takoona ma'as saajideen

﴾28﴿ And when your Lord said to the angels, Indeed, I am creating a human being from sounding clay, from aged mud
﴾29﴿ So when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, then fall down to him in prostration
﴾30﴿ So all the angels prostrated themselves, all together
﴾31﴿ Except Iblis; he refused to be among those who prostrated
﴾32﴿ Allah, the Exalted, said: O Iblis, what is your excuse that you were not among those who prostrated

[28] From this verse to verse 42, the event of the prostration to Adam (peace be upon him) is mentioned. This is the third time the story of Adam (peace be upon him) is narrated in the Noble Qur'an, and the main purpose in this Surah is to instill fear in the deniers, just as Iblis denied the command of Allah the Exalted due to arrogance, and as a result, he was punished with expulsion and curse until the Day of Judgment.
In the same way, whoever denies the oneness of Allah the Exalted out of opposition, enmity, and arrogance—his end will also be punishment.
This verse is a clear proof that Adam (peace be upon him) was a human being, and his descendants are also human beings—whether they are prophets, saints, or common people.
[29] (مِنْ رُوحِي) – What is meant by “spirit” here is that by which life appears in the body, and it is a creation. But its attribution to Allah the Exalted is for the purpose of honor and distinction.
(سَاجِدِينَ) – Qurtubi has said that the meaning of this prostration is greeting and honoring, not worship.
[30,31] The details of the prostration and the exception of Iblis have previously been mentioned in Surah al-Baqarah and al-A‘raf.
Note: From the arrangement in Surah al-Baqarah, it becomes clear that the command to prostrate was given to the angels after the creation of Adam (peace be upon him) and his appointment as vicegerent. But from the verses of this Surah, it appears that the command to prostrate existed before Adam (peace be upon him) was created. This seems, on the surface, to be a contradiction.
The chosen answer is that the command was given in a suspended form before Adam (peace be upon him) was created, and when he was created and appointed as vicegerent, then the command was issued in a definite form to the angels.
So the conclusion is that between verses 29 and 30 of this Surah, there is an omitted speech, which is: Adam (peace be upon him) was created, made a vicegerent, and taught the names. Then the angels were commanded: “Prostrate to Adam.”
[32] In this verse, there is an indication that Iblis committed two sins:
The first was that he did not accept the command of Allah the Exalted—this is mentioned with the word “abā” (he refused).
The second sin was that he opposed the collective obedience of the angels.
