وَمَا أُبَرِّئٍُ 584 ابراهیم
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ بَدَّلُوا نِعْمَتَ اللَّهِ كُفْرًا وَأَحَلُّوا قَوْمَهُمْ دَارَ الْبَوَارِ ﴿۲۸﴾ جَهَنَّمَ يَصْلَوْنَهَا وَبِئْسَ الْقَرَارُ ﴿۲۹﴾ وَجَعَلُوا لِلَّهِ أَنْدَادًا لِيُضِلُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ قُلْ تَمَتَّعُوا فَإِنَّ مَصِيرَكُمْ إِلَى النَّارِ ﴿۳۰﴾
﴾28﴿ Alam tara ilal lazeena baddaloo ni'matal laahi kufranw wa ahalloo qawmahum daaral bawaar
﴾29﴿ Jahannama yaslawnahaa wa bi'sal qaraar
﴾30﴿ Wa ja'aloo lillaahi andaadal liyudilloo 'an sabeelih; qul tamatta'oo fa innaa maseerakum ilan Naar
﴾28﴿ Have you not seen those who exchanged the favor of Allah for disbelief and led their people to destruction
﴾29﴿ It is Hell, they will enter it, and what an evil place of residence it is
﴾39﴿ And they assigned partners to Allah to mislead others from His path. Say, Enjoy yourselves, for indeed your return is to the Fire
[28] From here until the end of the surah is the fifth section, which also begins with (أَلَمْ). This section unfolds in a structured way:
Verses 28–30: A warning and rebuke to the polytheists.
Verse 31: Mentions three actions that repel punishment.
Verses 32–34: Present three rational arguments.
Verses 35–41: Provide narrative evidence from the story of Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him).
Verses 42–43: Contain warnings about the Hereafter.
Verses 44–45: Present worldly warnings.
Verses 47–51: Return to warnings of the Hereafter.
Verse 52: Concludes the surah with encouragement toward the Qur’an and Tawḥīd.
[Verse 29]: This verse contains a rebuke and warning to the polytheists, explaining the reason behind the statement “And Allah leads the wrongdoers astray.”
Two traits of the polytheists are mentioned:
1. They were ungrateful for Allah’s blessings—through disbelief and shirk.
2. They invited their people to shirk, making them not only astray themselves but also leaders in misguidance.
This results in eternal punishment, because they are both misguided and misguiding (ḍāllīn wa muḍillīn).
[29] In this verse, there is a rebuke and warning to the polytheists, and it serves as the reasoning for the previous statement: “And Allah leads the wrongdoers astray.”
Two of their traits are mentioned:
1. They showed ingratitude for the blessings of Allah the Exalted through disbelief and shirk.
2. They called their people toward shirk, becoming active promoters of misguidance.
As a result, they are deserving of eternal punishment, since they are both misguided themselves and misguiding others (ḍāllīn wa muḍillīn).
[30] In this verse, there is a detailed explanation of the previous verse, in an orderly manner:
The phrase (بَدَّلُوا) is explained through (وَجَعَلُوا لِلَّهِ أَنْدَادًا)—they replaced gratitude with setting up partners for Allah.
The phrase (أَحَلُّوا) is clarified by (لِيُضِلُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ)—meaning they led others astray from Allah’s path.
A supporting reference to this meaning is found in verse 8 of Surah Az-Zumar.
As for (قُلْ تَمَتَّعُوا)—the scholars (such as in Madārik) have said that tamattu‘ refers to when a person fulfills all their desires to the extent of their ability.
The intended meaning here is that such people are given only the temporary enjoyments of this worldly life, with no share in the Hereafter.
