وَمَا أُبَرِّئٍُ 555 یوسف

وَكَأَيِّنْ مِنْ آيَةٍ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ يَمُرُّونَ عَلَيْهَا وَهُمْ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضُونَ ﴿۱۰۵﴾ وَمَا يُؤْمِنُ أَكْثَرُهُمْ بِاللَّهِ إِلَّا وَهُمْ مُشْرِكُونَ ﴿۱۰۶﴾ أَفَأَمِنُوا أَنْ تَأْتِيَهُمْ غَاشِيَةٌ مِنْ عَذَابِ اللَّهِ أَوْ تَأْتِيَهُمُ السَّاعَةُ بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ ﴿۱۰۷﴾

﴾105﴿ Wa ka ayyim min Aayatin fis samaawaati wal ardi yamurroona 'alaihaa wa hum 'anhaa mu'ridoon
﴾106﴿ Wa maa yu'minu aksaru hum billaahi illaa wa hum mushrikoon
﴾107﴿ Afa aminooo an taatiya hum ghaashiyatum min 'azaabil laahi aw taatiyahumus Saa'atu baghtatanw wa hum laa yash'uroon

﴾105﴿ And there are many signs of the oneness of Allah, the Exalted, in the heavens and the earth, yet whenever they pass by them, they turn away from them
﴾106﴿ And most people do not believe in Allah but that they also associate partners with Him
﴾107﴿ Are they secure from the fact that an all-encompassing punishment from Allah might come upon them, or that the Hour (the Day of Judgment) might come suddenly while they are unaware

[105] In this verse, there is a warning to the polytheists for their turning away from the proofs of monotheism, just as they turn away from the revelation of the Messenger.
The phrase “yamurrūna” refers to their witnessing of these things.
[106] In this verse, there is a warning against mixing polytheism with faith, and this is the interpretation of turning away.
The point of the verse is that many people acknowledge that Allah the Exalted is the Creator and Owner, and sometimes, during hardships, they seek help and supplicate to Him.
However, at other times, they also perform acts of worship to others and still hold beliefs of polytheism.
They engage in polytheistic practices, such as believing others besides Allah the Exalted to be effective, helpers, or knower of the unseen, and they seek help from them in their absence, making vows and offerings in their names.
Thus, these people are certainly polytheists, and their faith is nullified due to their polytheism.
This verse clearly shows that when belief in polytheism is mixed with faith, that faith becomes void.
Therefore, mere verbal acknowledgment does not make one a believer; rather, such a person is a polytheist.
Ibn Kathir has written that this also includes actions such as showing off (riya’), tying charms on the arm for protection, and swearing oaths by other than Allah.
[107] Since turning away and polytheism were mentioned in the two previous verses, and these are causes of punishment, in this verse the threat is mentioned along with the punishment.
Thus, it becomes clear that in the previous verses the cause was mentioned, and in this verse the result (the consequence) is mentioned.
