وَمَا أُبَرِّئٍُ 542 یوسف
فَإِنْ لَمْ تَأْتُونِي بِهِ فَلَا كَيْلَ لَكُمْ عِنْدِي وَلَا تَقْرَبُونِ ﴿۶۰﴾ قَالُوا سَنُرَاوِدُ عَنْهُ أَبَاهُ وَإِنَّا لَفَاعِلُونَ ﴿۶۱﴾ وَقَالَ لِفِتْيَانِهِ اجْعَلُوا بِضَاعَتَهُمْ فِي رِحَالِهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَعْرِفُونَهَا إِذَا انْقَلَبُوا إِلَى أَهْلِهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ ﴿۶۲﴾ فَلَمَّا رَجَعُوا إِلَى أَبِيهِمْ قَالُوا يَا أَبَانَا مُنِعَ مِنَّا الْكَيْلُ فَأَرْسِلْ مَعَنَا أَخَانَا نَكْتَلْ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ ﴿۶۳﴾
﴾60﴿ Fa il lam taatoonee bihee falaa kaila lakum 'indee wa laa taqraboon
﴾61﴿ Qaaloo sanuraawidu 'anhu abaahu wa innaa lafaa'iloon
﴾62﴿ Wa qaala lifityaanihij 'aloo bidaa'atahum fee rihaalihim la'allahum ya'rifoonahaaa izan qalabooo ilaaa ahlihim la'allahum yarji'oon
﴾63﴿ Falammaa raja'ooo ilaaa abeehim qaaloo yaaa abaanaa muni'a minnal kailu fa arsil ma'anaaa akhaanaa naktal wa innaa lahoo lahaafizoon
﴾60﴿ So if you do not bring him, there will be no provisions for you with me, and do not approach my land
﴾61﴿ They said, 'We will deceive his father and surely we are doers of this
﴾62﴿ And Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, said to his servants: Put their payment (the price they have paid) back in their belongings, so that they may recognize it when they return to their family. Perhaps they will come back again
﴾63﴿ So when they returned to their father, they said, O our father, we have been denied provisions, so send our brother with us that we may obtain provisions. And indeed, we will guard him
[60] In this verse too, Yusuf (peace be upon him) strongly encourages them to bring Binyamin, using firm emphasis and warning.
The emphasis is that if they do not bring him, they will be considered liars and deceivers, and as a result:
No more grain will be given to them, and
They will be forbidden from entering Egypt again.
Note: Yusuf’s (peace be upon him) request for Binyamin and the strategies he used to keep him with himself were all carried out by the command of Allah Most High—
even though it brought difficulty and emotional trial to Ya‘qub (peace be upon him), it was part of divine wisdom and greater purpose.
[61] In this verse, the promise of the brothers is mentioned regarding bringing Binyamin, due to their necessity, as no more food would be given without him.
The phrase (سَنُرَاوِدُ عَنْهُ) – “We will try to persuade him” – refers to persistent effort through planning and persuasion.
The word "muwāradah" implies strategic or careful negotiation, recognizing that their father would not hand Binyamin over without thoughtful convincing.
This highlights their awareness that Ya‘qub (peace be upon him) would be deeply hesitant and protective over Binyamin.
[62] In this verse, the strategy of Yusuf (peace be upon him) for bringing his brother Binyamin is mentioned.
His plan was to instruct his servants to secretly place the payment for the grain back into his brothers’ belongings.
(لَعَلَّهُمْ يَعْرِفُونَهَا) – There are two explanations:
1. When the family of Ya‘qub (peace be upon him) sees the money returned, and since they never take food without paying for it, they will feel obliged to send the sons back to return the payment, and thus they will certainly bring Binyamin with them.
2. Yusuf (peace be upon him) may have known by some means that the household of Ya‘qub had no more wealth left, and they wouldn’t be able to return unless the payment was returned to them out of kindness.
So Yusuf (peace be upon him) returned the payment as an act of favor, and such generosity by rulers toward relatives or the needy is permissible.
Imam Bukhārī even included a chapter on this.
The wisdom in returning the money secretly was that Yusuf (peace be upon him) knew that his family, due to their high sense of honor, would not accept a gift or charity openly.
(لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ) – “so that they may return” – refers to the result of recognizing the money, meaning: when they recognize it, they will surely return.
[63] Since bringing more grain had become necessary, and taking Binyamin was a condition for it, the brothers—before even unpacking their goods—requested permission from their father to take their brother along.
They explained the reason by saying: (مُنِعَ مِنَّا الْكَيْلُ) – “we have been denied grain,” meaning the denial was conditional on not bringing their brother.
The phrase (نَكْتَلْ) – “so we may receive measure (grain)” – was used because the entire distribution of grain had been made dependent on bringing Binyamin with them.
This shows their urgency and the clear conditions laid out by Yusuf (peace be upon him).
