وَمَا مِنْ دَابَّةٍ 536 یوسف
يَا صَاحِبَيِ السِّجْنِ أَمَّا أَحَدُكُمَا فَيَسْقِي رَبَّهُ خَمْرًا وَأَمَّا الْآخَرُ فَيُصْلَبُ فَتَأْكُلُ الطَّيْرُ مِنْ رَأْسِهِ قُضِيَ الْأَمْرُ الَّذِي فِيهِ تَسْتَفْتِيَانِ ﴿۴۱﴾ وَقَالَ لِلَّذِي ظَنَّ أَنَّهُ نَاجٍ مِنْهُمَا اذْكُرْنِي عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ فَأَنْسَاهُ الشَّيْطَانُ ذِكْرَ رَبِّهِ فَلَبِثَ فِي السِّجْنِ بِضْعَ سِنِينَ ﴿۴۲﴾
﴾41﴿ Yaa saahibayis sijni ammaaa ahadukumaa fa yasqee rabbahoo khamranw wa ammal aakharu fa yuslabu fata'kulut tairu mir ra'sih; qudiyal amrul lazee feehi tastaftiyaan
﴾42﴿ Wa qaala lillazee zanna annahoo najim minhumaz kurnee 'inda rabbika fa-ansaahush Shaitaanu zikra Rabbihee falabisa fis sijni bid'a sineen
﴾41﴿ O my companions in prison, as for one of you, he will give his master wine to drink (he will be saved), but as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter has been decreed concerning that which you inquire
﴾42﴿ And Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, said to the one of the two whom he knew would be saved: Mention me to your master." But Satan made him forget to mention it to his master, so Yusuf, peace be upon him, remained in prison for several years
[41] In this verse, the best method of invitation (da‘wah) is mentioned. When these individuals came to Yusuf (peace be upon him) for their own purpose and were in need, Yusuf (peace be upon him) first called them to Tawḥīd (monotheism) and prophethood.
Only after presenting the message of monotheism and Prophethood did he interpret their dreams.
In the interpretation of the dreams of Yusuf’s companions, one’s salvation is mentioned and the other’s punishment is stated.
The phrase (قُضِيَ الْأَمْرُ) – “the matter has been decided” – indicates that this interpretation is definitive and certain, as it is from Allah, the Most High.
[42] In this verse, it is stated that Yusuf (peace be upon him) entrusted a responsibility to the one who would be saved—that he should inform the king about Yusuf and his condition, which the man had witnessed.
The purpose behind this was to convey the message of Tawḥīd (monotheism) to the king.
However, Shayṭān made his companion forget to deliver the message and explain Yusuf’s condition.
This caused Yusuf (peace be upon him) to remain in prison for a long period.
There is a difference of opinion among commentators regarding the length of this period—seven, twelve, or fourteen years.
(لِلَّذِي ظَنَّ) – the pronoun may refer either to the cupbearer or to Yusuf (peace be upon him). The word ẓann (ظن) here means certainty.
(اذْكُرْنِي عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ) – “Mention me to your lord” refers to mentioning the entire situation in prison, which includes the miracle and the call to monotheism.
(فَأَنْسَاهُ الشَّيْطَانُ) – the correct view is that the pronoun refers to the cupbearer, based on the clue in verse (45), (وَادَّكَرَ بَعْدَ أُمَّةٍ) – “He remembered after a long time.”
