يَعْتَذِرُونَ 475 يونس

قَالَ مُوسَى أَتَقُولُونَ لِلْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاءَكُمْ أَسِحْرٌ هَذَا وَلَا يُفْلِحُ السَّاحِرُونَ ﴿۷۷﴾ قَالُوا أَجِئْتَنَا لِتَلْفِتَنَا عَمَّا وَجَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ آبَاءَنَا وَتَكُونَ لَكُمَا الْكِبْرِيَاءُ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَمَا نَحْنُ لَكُمَا بِمُؤْمِنِينَ ﴿۷۸﴾ وَقَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ ائْتُونِي بِكُلِّ سَاحِرٍ عَلِيمٍ ﴿۷۹﴾ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ السَّحَرَةُ قَالَ لَهُمْ مُوسَى أَلْقُوا مَا أَنْتُمْ مُلْقُونَ ﴿۸۰﴾ فَلَمَّا أَلْقَوْا قَالَ مُوسَى مَا جِئْتُمْ بِهِ السِّحْرُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَيُبْطِلُهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُصْلِحُ عَمَلَ الْمُفْسِدِينَ ﴿۸۱﴾

﴾77﴿ Qaalaa Moosaaa 'a taqooloona lil haqqi lammmaa jaaa'a kum 'a sihrun haazaa wa laa yuflihus saahiroon
﴾78﴿ Qaaloo aji'tanaa litalfitanaa 'ammaa wajadnaa 'alaihi aabaaa'anaa wa takoona lakumal kibriyaaa'u fil ardi wa maa nahnu lakumaa bi mu'mineen
﴾79﴿ Wa qaala Fir'awnu' toonee bikulli saahirin 'aleem
﴾80﴿ Falammaa jaaa'assa haratu qaala lahum Moosaaa alqoo maaa antum mulqoon
﴾81﴿ Falammaaa alqaw qaala Moosaa maa ji'tum bihis sihr; innal laaha sa yubtiluhoo; innal laaha laa yuslihu 'amalal mufsideen

﴾77﴿ Moses (peace be upon him) said, Do you say concerning the truth when it has come to you, Is this magic Yet the magician will never succeed
﴾78﴿ They said, Have you come to us to turn us away from the way we found our forefathers upon, so that you two may have sovereignty in the land? And we are not believers in you
﴾79﴿ And Pharaoh said, Bring to me every skilled magician
﴾80﴿ So when the magicians came, Moses (peace be upon him) said to them (after their words), Cast what you have to cast
﴾81﴿ When they (the magicians) cast down, Moses (peace be upon him) said, "What you have brought is magic. Indeed, Allah the Exalted will soon nullify it. Truly, Allah does not let the deeds of the corrupters succeed

[77] In this verse, there is a refutation from Mūsā (peace be upon him) directed at the deniers.
(لَمَّا جَاءَكُمْ) – After this phrase, the statement "هَذَا سِحرٌ" (This is magic) is implied but omitted, and the full sentence would be: "Do you say this is magic when it has come to you?"
In (ءَسِحرٌ) – the hamzah (ء) at the beginning is for interrogation, but it carries the tone of denial and rebuke (استفهام إنكاري وتوبيخي).
Meaning: “Is this really magic?” – with the intent of strongly rejecting their accusation and exposing the baselessness of their claims.
[78] In this verse, the second instance of Pharaoh’s arrogance (استکبار) is mentioned. He directed two accusations (الزامات) toward Mūsā (peace be upon him) and Hārūn (peace be upon him):
1. First accusation: “You want to take away the kingdom of Egypt from us.” – This was intended to frighten and mislead the general public, making them think Mūsā and Hārūn had political motives.
2. Second accusation: “And you want to expel your elite and powerful people from the land.” – This was aimed at intimidating the ruling class and powerful elites, warning them of losing their influence.
Through these two strategies, Pharaoh tried to turn both the common people and the elite against the prophets, using fear and political framing instead of facing the truth.
[79] In this statement, the third arrogance of Pharaoh is shown — through the opposition by the magicians. In this way, he attempts to reveal that Musa (peace be upon him) is a sorcerer.
[80] In this verse, the intended structure is that Musa (peace be upon him) spoke to them after their statement — meaning, the initial statement was made to Musa (peace be upon him), and then he responded. This is similarly mentioned in verse 115 of Surah Al-A‘raf and verse 65 of Surah Ta-Ha.
[81] In this verse, Musa (peace be upon him) refutes the magicians, indicating that sorcery is corruption. The phrase "مَا جِئْتُمْ بِهِ السِّحْرُ" implies an exclusive negation — meaning, my miracle is not sorcery; rather, your act is sorcery.
Note: In the Tafsir of Qurtubi, it is narrated from Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that whoever lies down on their bed and recites "مَا جِئْتُمْ بِهِ السِّحْرُ" until the end of the verse, sorcery will not harm them.
Also, if this verse is written on the body of someone afflicted by magic, Allah the Exalted will remove the magic from them. However, there is no concrete evidence for this method of writing, and it may lead to other harms. Beware — reciting the Qur'an for healing is indeed well-established.
