وَاعْلَمُوا 415 التوبة

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِنَ الْأَحْبَارِ وَالرُّهْبَانِ لَيَأْكُلُونَ أَمْوَالَ النَّاسِ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِينَ يَكْنِزُونَ الذَّهَبَ وَالْفِضَّةَ وَلَا يُنْفِقُونَهَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَبَشِّرْهُمْ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ﴿۳۴﴾ يَوْمَ يُحْمَى عَلَيْهَا فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ فَتُكْوَى بِهَا جِبَاهُهُمْ وَجُنُوبُهُمْ وَظُهُورُهُمْ هَذَا مَا كَنَزْتُمْ لِأَنْفُسِكُمْ فَذُوقُوا مَا كُنْتُمْ تَكْنِزُونَ ﴿۳۵﴾

﴾34﴿ Yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanooo inna kaseeramminal ahbaari warruhbaani la ya'kuloona amwaalan naasi bil baatili wa yasuddoona 'an sabeelil laah; wallazeena yaknizoonaz zahaba wal fiddata wa laayunfiqoonahaa fee sabeelil laahi fabashshirhum bi'azaabin aleem
﴾35﴿ Yawma yuhmaa 'alaihaa fee naari jahannama fatukwaa bihaa jibaahuhum wa junoobuhum wa zuhooruhum haazaa maa kanaztum li anfusikum fazooqoo maa kuntum taknizoon

﴾34﴿ O people, many of the mullahs and preceptor eat up people's wealth unjustly and prevent people from the path of Allah Almighty And those who hoard gold and silver, then give them good tidings of a painful punishment
﴾35﴿ On the Day when these things will be heated in the fire of Hell, their foreheads, their sides, and their backs will be branded with it It is said: This is what you were hoarding for yourselvs Now taste the evil of what you were hoarding

[34] The connection is that in the previous verses, their enmity toward Islam was mentioned, so in this verse, the believers are warned about other evil traits similar to that enmity—such as greed for wealth, misleading people, and miserliness—these are also reasons for fighting. What is meant by "many" are the scholars and elders, as mentioned in verse 31. "They consume" refers to taking and acquiring, though the main intent is eating, so it is expressed with the word "eat." This expression is very reproachful, implying that they have destroyed the religion for the sake of their stomachs. By "the people," it means their followers and disciples, as also mentioned in verse 31. "With falsehood" refers to all means of acquiring wealth that are contrary to the Shari‘ah, which they present attractively to people—such as bribes, false vows, and so on. "The path of Allah" means monotheism, the Sunnah, and the Qur'an. "And those who hoard" is connected to the previous phrase and describes the attributes of the Jewish and Christian scholars and monks. What is meant by hoarding is not paying zakat and obligatory dues, even if one is wealthy. This is the opinion of the majority of the noble Companions, except Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him). It is supported by the hadith in Abu Dawud, narrated from ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), where he asked the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace) for the interpretation of this verse. The Prophet replied in essence that Allah has set one-fortieth and one-tenth as the zakat, and inheritance is a right of the heirs—this is proof that accumulating wealth beyond that is permissible. "They do not spend it" — the pronoun refers to the hoarded wealth and properties.
Note: Although these verses describe the traits of Jews and Christians, they also apply to scholars in this ummah who have these three characteristics. The hadith in Bukhari supports this, which contains the words: "It was revealed about us and about them."

[35] In this verse, the fear of the Hereafter is mentioned for those who possess these traits. Three body parts are referred to in this verse because when they saw the poor, their foreheads would frown, then they would turn their sides away, and then turn their backs. Another interpretation is that this is a metaphor indicating being surrounded from all four sides. In this verse as well, the pronouns ‘alayhā (upon it) and bihā (with it) refer back to the hoarded wealth and properties.
