﴾174﴿ O people! Surely there has come to you a clear proof from your Lord, and We have sent down to you a manifest light.
﴾175﴿ But as for those who believe in Allah and hold firmly to this Qur’an, He will admit them into His special mercy and abundant reward, and Allah will guide them to Himself on a straight path.
﴾176﴿ They ask you (about inheritance). Say: Allah gives you a ruling concerning kalālah (a person who dies leaving neither descendants nor ascendants). If a man dies and has no children but has a sister, then she will have half of what he leaves behind. And he (the brother) will inherit all from his sister if she has no children. But if there are two sisters, then for both of them is two-thirds of what he leaves. And if there are brothers and sisters — men and women — then the share of a male is equal to that of two females. Allah clarifies for you, lest you go astray, and Allah is All-Knowing of everything.
[174] This is encouragement towards the Qur’an and its truthfulness.
(Burhānun) — this refers to the Qur’an, or to the Messenger himself.
(Nūran) — this is the Noble Qur’an.
Burhān is called “definite proof” because it brings certainty and enables one to overcome opponents.
[175] This is a glad tiding for the followers.
(Wa‘taṣamū bihi) — the pronoun may refer to Allah, to the “proof” (Qur’an), or to the “light”; all interpretations are valid.
(Raḥmah) — this means Paradise in the Hereafter, and “abundant reward” refers to extra blessings; or, “mercy” could mean guidance to faith, and “bounty” the perfection of religion.
(Wa yahdīhim) — this refers to guidance in this world.
[176] This verse provides further clarification on the issue of inheritance, and it serves as an example of the straight path and its illumination regarding inheritance. Opposing it is following the ways of ignorance and deviating from the straight path. In this verse, the shares of full siblings and half-siblings are mentioned, and the interpretation of this was previously discussed. In this verse, there are four inheritance matters. "Kalalah" refers to a person who has neither a father nor a grandfather among his ancestors, nor a son or grandson among his descendants. (أَنْ تَضِلُّوا) means "so that you do not go astray."
