لَا يُحِبُّ اللَّهُ 208 النِّســاء

يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لَا تَغْلُوا فِي دِينِكُمْ وَلَا تَقُولُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ إِلَّا الْحَقَّ إِنَّمَا الْمَسِيحُ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَكَلِمَتُهُ أَلْقَاهَا إِلَى مَرْيَمَ وَرُوحٌ مِنْهُ فَآمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَلَا تَقُولُوا ثَلَاثَةٌ انْتَهُوا خَيْرًا لَكُمْ إِنَّمَا اللَّهُ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ سُبْحَانَهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَكَفَى بِاللَّهِ وَكِيلًا ﴿۱۷۱﴾ لَنْ يَسْتَنْكِفَ الْمَسِيحُ أَنْ يَكُونَ عَبْدًا لِلَّهِ وَلَا الْمَلَائِكَةُ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ وَمَنْ يَسْتَنْكِفْ عَنْ عِبَادَتِهِ وَيَسْتَكْبِرْ فَسَيَحْشُرُهُمْ إِلَيْهِ جَمِيعًا ﴿۱۷۲﴾ فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ فَيُوَفِّيهِمْ أُجُورَهُمْ وَيَزِيدُهُمْ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ وَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ اسْتَنْكَفُوا وَاسْتَكْبَرُوا فَيُعَذِّبُهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا وَلَا يَجِدُونَ لَهُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ وَلِيًّا وَلَا نَصِيرًا ﴿۱۷۳﴾

﴾171﴿ Yaaa Ahlal Kitaabi laa taghloo fee deenikum wa laa taqooloo 'alal laahi illalhaqq; innamal Maseehu 'Eesab-nu-Maryama Rasoolul laahi wa Kalimatuhooo alqaahaaa ilaa Maryama wa roohum minhum fa aaminoo billaahi wa Rusulihee wa laa taqooloo salaasah; intahoo khairallakum; innamal laahu Ilaahunw Waahid, Subhaanahooo any yakoona lahoo walad; lahoo maa fissamaawaati wa maa fil ard; wa kafaa billaahi Wakeelaa
﴾172﴿ Lay yastankifal Maseehu ai yakoona 'abdal lillaahi wa lal malaaa'ikatul muqarraboon; wa mai yastankif 'an ibaadatihee wa yastakbir fasa yahshuruhum ilaihi jamee'aa
﴾173﴿ Fa ammal lazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati fa yuwaffeehim ujoorahum wa yazeeduhum min fadlihee wa ammal lazeenas tankafoo wastakbaroo fa yu'azzibuhum 'azaaban aleema wa laa yajidoona lahum min doonil laahi waliyyanw wa laa naseeraa

﴾171﴿ O People of the Book! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, and do not say anything about Allah except the truth.
Surely, the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, is only the Messenger of Allah, and His word which He conveyed to Mary, and a spirit from Him.
So believe in Allah and His messengers, and do not say “Three” (i.e., do not say: “trinity”) — stop! That is better for you.
Surely Allah is only One God; exalted is He above having a son.
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allah is sufficient as a Disposer of affairs.
﴾172﴿ The Messiah (peace be upon him) never considered it beneath him to be a servant of Allah, nor do the angels nearest to Allah.
And whoever considers it beneath him to worship Allah and is arrogant, Allah will soon gather them all to Himself.
﴾173﴿ So as for those who believed and acted according to the way of the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace), Allah will give them their full reward and increase them out of His bounty.
But as for those who considered it beneath themselves to worship Allah and were arrogant, He will punish them with a painful punishment.
And they will not find for themselves, besides Allah, any protector or helper.

[171] In this verse, there is a refutation of the creedal shirk of the Christians.
(Lā taghlū fī dīnikum) — to go beyond the legal limits and the way of the Shari‘ah is called “ghulūw” (excess), and this is forbidden.
For example, to believe that Jesus (peace be upon him) is Allah or the son of Allah — this is excess and shirk.
Or to perform an act in a way contrary to the Prophet’s (May Allah bless him and give him peace) method, and consider it a good deed — this is innovation (bid‘ah).
Likewise, falling short (deficiency) of the Shari‘ah (called “tafrīṭ”) is also included in excess here; for example, the Jews showed deficiency regarding Jesus (peace be upon him) by denying his prophethood and calling him illegitimate.
So here “excess” (ghulūw) is in its general sense.
That is why afterwards, the qualities of Jesus (peace be upon him) are mentioned, which are in between exaggeration and deficiency.
The meaning of “the word” is “kun” (Be), by which he was created without a father.
(Rūḥun minhu) — “min” here is for attribution and honor.
(Wa lā taqūlū thalātha) — about the Trinity, the various views of the Christians are discussed in the tafsir of Surah Al-Ma’idah.
[172] This is a refutation of the Christians.
They used to say to the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) that he was disrespecting Jesus (peace be upon him) by calling him a servant (of Allah).
(Yastankif) — to feel aversion or dislike, meaning to naturally recoil from worshiping Allah.
(Yastakbir) — to recognize that worshiping Allah is right, but to consider oneself above it — both are forms of disbelief.
(Al-malā’ikatu al-muqarrabūn) — this is also a refutation of those who commit shirk with the angels.
[173] This is both a glad tiding and a warning.
