﴾1﴿ Yaaa aiyuhan naasut taqoo Rabbakumul lazee khalaqakum min nafsinw waahidatinw wa khalaqa minhaa zawjahaa wa bas sa minhumaa rijaalan kaseeranw wa nisaaa'aa; wattaqul laahallazee tasaaa 'aloona bihee wal arhaam; innal laaha kaana 'alaikum Raqeeba
﴾2﴿ Wa aatul yataamaaa amwaalahum wa laa tatabad dalul khabeesa bittaiyibi wa laa ta'kulooo amwaalahum ilaaa amwaalikum; innahoo kaana hooban kabeeraa

﴾1﴿ O people! Fear your Lord, who created you from a single soul, and created its mate from it, and spread from the two of them many men and women. And fear Allah, by whom you ask one another, and (beware of) cutting the ties of kinship. Surely, Allah is ever Watchful over you.
﴾2﴿ And give to the orphans their wealth, and do not exchange the impure for the pure, and do not consume their wealth along with your own. Surely, that is a great sin.

surah An Nisa
The Women

Relevancy: In the previous surahs, the principles of faith were explained. In this surah, the principles of security for worldly life are presented, and wrongdoing is prohibited, rejecting the ways of ignorance (Jahiliyyah).
Claim of this surah: It is an explanation of the laws of security and protection from oppression—and this is mentioned in verse (1). There are two types of wrongdoing: one concerning the rights of people (حقوق العباد), and the other concerning the right of Allah, which is shirk (associating partners with Him). For this reason, the command for taqwa (God-consciousness) is mentioned twice.
Summary of the surah: The surah is divided into three sections, and each section contains three chapters. The first section extends up to verse (57), and the first chapter is up to verse (36). In this first chapter, there is encouragement to implement the rulings, followed by sixteen rulings related to household management.

interpretation

[1] This is encouragement to uphold all the rulings of this surah: since you were all created from one father and mother, why do you wrong each other and cut off the ties of kinship? The first mention of taqwa (God-consciousness) refers to correcting one’s beliefs, and the second refers to acting upon the rulings. One meaning of (تَسَاءَلُونَ) is that you ask one another by invoking Allah’s name; another meaning is that you ask from Him. The form “tafāʿul” (تفاعل) indicates abundance. (وَالْأَرْحَامَ) is either connected to Allah—meaning “beware of severing family ties”—or it is connected to “bihi” (by Him), meaning you ask each other by means of kinship ties.
[2] This first ruling is about giving orphans their wealth, prohibiting the exchange of the orphan’s good property for one's own inferior property, and forbidding the consumption of orphan’s wealth—whether separately or jointly. It is a rejection of the practice in the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah), where people would consume the wealth of orphans by mixing it with their own.
