قَالَ يَا آدَمُ أَنْبِئْهُمْ بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ فَلَمَّا أَنْبَأَهُمْ بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُلْ لَكُمْ إِنِّي أَعْلَمُ غَيْبَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَأَعْلَمُ مَا تُبْدُونَ وَمَا كُنْتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ ﴿33﴾ وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ أَبَى وَاسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ ﴿34﴾
﴾33﴿ Qaala yaaa Aadamu ambi' hum biasmaaa'ihim falammaa amba ahum bi asmaaa'ihim qaala alam aqul lakum inneee a'lamu ghaibas samaawaati wal ardi wa a'lamu maa tubdoona wa maa kuntum taktumoon
﴾34﴿ Wa iz qulnaa lilmalaaa'i katis judoo liAadama fasajadooo illaaa Ibleesa abaa wastakbara wa kaana minal kaafireen
﴾33﴿ Allah said, “O Adam (peace be upon him), inform them of the names of those things (and their benefits).” Then, when Adam informed them of the names of those things (and their benefits), Allah said, “Did I not tell you that surely I know the unseen (hidden) matters of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you conceal?”
﴾34﴿ And when We said to the angels, “Prostrate (in respect, by lowering your heads) before Adam (peace be upon him),” they all prostrated except for Iblis; he refused and acted arrogantly, and he was among the disbelievers.
[33] The purpose of this announcement (informing) is to make it clear to the angels that Adam (peace be upon him) possesses the knowledge of these things. (Did I not tell you…) In this story, the main objective is to establish that knowledge of the unseen and knowledge of everything belongs to Allah alone.
[34] This is the second story, and in the Noble Quran it is mentioned in seven surahs, each time for different wisdoms. Here, one main objective is to mention the fourth favor granted to human beings: that Allah, the Exalted, bestowed upon Adam (peace be upon him) the honor of the angels prostrating to him, living in Paradise, undergoing a divinely ordained test, and being sent down to the earth. This was so that both the cosmic and religious order would be established. He also taught him how to repent. These blessings are for all the children of Adam (peace be upon him).
(اسْجُدُو) The purpose of prostration here is a prostration of respect, performed by lowering the head as a way of greeting and honoring. This form of bowing down to a created being, as mentioned in this verse, is now abrogated; Ibn Kathir and other commentators have written this.
(وَاسْتَكْبَرَ) Arrogance here refers to rejecting the truth, and those with arrogance look down on people. Arrogance without right means being proud when one does not deserve to be, while in some cases, such as in the attributes of Allah, pride is appropriate, but not for His servants. Here, the exception of Iblis is a disconnected exception because he was not of the angels, but of the jinn. This is mentioned in verse 12 of Surah Al-A'raf.
And in this passage, four conditions of Iblis are mentioned: not prostrating, denying the obligation to prostrate, arrogance (which is the reason for his denial), and being included among the disbelievers.
(وَكَانَ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ) This has two meanings: first, that in the knowledge of Allah, he was among the disbelievers, and his life among the angels was not an honor, but rather a means of gradual deception (istidraj). Second, he did not repent, so he became one of the disbelievers.
