عَمَِّ 1530 اَلْبَلَد
َ فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ﴿۱۳﴾ أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ ﴿۱۴﴾ يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ ﴿۱۵﴾ أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ ﴿۱۶﴾ ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ ﴿۱۷﴾ أُولَئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ ﴿۱۸﴾ وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ ﴿۱۹﴾ عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُؤْصَدَةٌ ﴿۲۰﴾
﴾13﴿ Fakku raqabah
﴾14﴿ Aw it'aamun fee yawmin zee masghabah
﴾15﴿ Yateeman zaa maqrabah
﴾16﴿ Aw miskeenan zaa matrabah
﴾17﴿ Summa kaana minal lazeena aamanoo wa tawaasaw bissabri wa tawaasaw bilmarhamah
﴾18﴿ Ulaaa'ika As-haabul maimanah
﴾19﴿ Wallazeena kafaroo bi aayaatinaa hum as-haabul Mash'amah
﴾20﴿ Alaihim naarum mu'sadah
﴾13﴿ Neck relief
﴾14﴿ Or feeding on the day of hunger
﴾15﴿ An orphan of near relationship
﴾16﴿ Or a needy person in distress
﴾17﴿ Then he will be among those who have believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion
﴾18﴿ These are the people of the right course
﴾19﴿ And those who disbelieved in Our signs, they are the people of the left course
﴾20﴿ Upon them is a fire enclosed from all sides
[13] The ‘aqabah (steep path) is explained through six matters.
Freeing a slave—the intended meaning of raqabah is a complete human being, and freeing refers to liberating him from slavery, from the burden of debt, from the chains of sins, from ignorance, and from oppression.
[14,15,16] In these verses, the second and third qualities are mentioned.
In a time of hunger—masghabah refers to hunger and strong desire for food. Feeding others is always virtuous and rewarding, but doing so during a time of hunger brings even greater reward.
On a day of hunger—meaning a time when people are experiencing hunger, or a period of famine, or a day when someone has passed away in a household and the family is unable to prepare food due to their grief—feeding them in such moments brings great reward. This is indicated in the hadith where, when Ja‘far (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) came to his house and said, “Prepare food for the family of Ja‘far, for something has come to them that keeps them occupied.”
Of close relation—this is specified due to the extra reward and stronger right, as mentioned in the hadith: charity to a poor person is one charity, but to a relative it is both charity and maintaining family ties (Tirmidhi).
In extreme poverty—refers to a poor person who has no home, no bedding, and a large family—meaning he is in greater need than other poor and needy individuals.
[17] In this, three other qualities are mentioned. Faith is the condition and foundation for all deeds, so sometimes it is mentioned before, sometimes in the middle, and sometimes at the end. But since the purpose of this surah is to mention kindness to creation, it is mentioned here after the acts of kindness.
And they enjoin one another to patience—in difficulties and trials there are religious duties that require patience, so this quality is specifically mentioned. Patience here means remaining firm in faith and righteous actions despite hardships.
And they enjoin one another to compassion—since the purpose of the surah is to encourage kindness to creation, and that kindness becomes apparent through mercy and concern for the weak, this quality is specifically highlighted.
[18] This is glad tidings for those who possess these qualities.
[19,20] This refers to the wretched one who exerts effort in falsehood, the root of which is disbelief in the signs of Allah. It is a warning.
Sealed—meaning completely closed off from all sides, with no opening or way of escape.
